Real Life section maintenance (including NRLEP and LRLEO) (New Crowner 9/20/25)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the staff to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP or LRLEO index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.

As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag no longer works. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. Per word of admin as of 2025, any replacement for this system will not use markup, so these tags can be removed.
  • If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the staff to add the trope via this thread.

So when are we switching crowners? I noticed that Dark Lord on Life Support has Real Life examples despite being a morality trope.

Cartoonish Companions (10-2) - NRLEP

Keet (10-4) - NRLEP

Tsurime Eyes (7-5) - Keep

Tareme Eyes (7-5) - Keep

New crowner made, hollered for the switch.

You forgot Bad to the Last Drop. It's best grouped with A Tankard of Moose Urine, which is its counterpart for alcoholic beverages.

I'd like to bring up So Beautiful, It's a Curse again. The proposed rationale is that it's too common in real life and attracts gossip. I think from these posts it's safe to add No Ontological Inertia as well.

I'd also like to focus on the candidates under Sex first, especially Mile-High Club; I Have Boobs, You Must Obey!; and Or Are You Just Happy to See Me?.

EDIT: I think Gratuitous Greek is too common in real life; this bullet point from says it all:

Suffice it to say, this trope is absolutely ubiquitous in the mathematics and sciences. The Other Wiki has an extensive list of examples.
If made NRLEP, it would make a good page quote for NoRealLife.Too Common.

I mean, I am conflicted about A Tankard of Moose Urine. On the one hand, I can see why it can attract complaining.

On the other hand, this possibly is going to complicate troping for food review channels where this trope comes into play. Especially food review channels where the reviewers adopt stage personas.

Mark me as an abstain for now.

[up][up][up] Fag Hag is a sexuality trope, and Dark Lord on Life Support is an Evil Trope. Add them both to the crowner. Any comments on the tropes I mentioned in the last post?

[up][up][up][up] Do you think it could be possible to exclude only on-page Real Life examples? A few other tropes (Mate or Die and The Von Trope Family) have restrictions on which types of RL examples may be listed, but don't ban them outright. Also, should Bad to the Last Drop be grouped with it?

What are your thoughts on Gratuitous Greek and the other tropes I mentioned in the same post?

I feel like I might've framed Fag Hag the wrong way. It might be more of a Gossip and Stereotype trope since it's more about the person who hangs around gay men than the sexuality itself.

Question, why are we allowing people to trope Literature.Sick Little Monkeys, a non-fiction book? There's something off about troping John K things like a Bad Boss or a Jerkass.

Whoever took the time to make the work page made moments subpages for it.

Here's Funny.Going Clear:

  • Paul Haggis' recollection of first reading OT III is priceless, especially when he refers to Xenu as "this space guy."
  • As Jason Beghe mocks the Stepford Smiler tendencies of Scientologists, he makes a hilariously crazy face and crosses one of his eyes.
  • When L. Ron Hubbard's lies aren't dangerous, psychotic, or paranoid, they're downright hilarious. Probably the best example of this was during Hubbard's military "career" in World War II, during which he was posted to the Oregon coast and given command of a small subchaser. After detecting a Japanese submarine with the ship's sonar, Hubbard ordered his crew to drop no less than 35 depth charges on the elusive sub for more than two days. The military ultimately ordered Hubbard to stop when it became obvious that he was firing at nothing. Upon reviewing the incident, naval officials determined that Hubbard was forcing his crew to attack magnetic deposits which activated the ship's sonar. Hubbard was finally relieved of command when during a military exercise he shelled a deserted island that he didn't realize belonged to Mexico.

I'd say if a non-fiction work puts some creative spin on real life events, such as a documentary, NLREP tropes can be applied. If a non-fiction work simply contains descriptions of real life events, such as a Wikipedia article, newscast, or a YouTube video about Internet drama, then I'd say no.

Phrase Catcher is full of general examples that are less "specific catchphrase said to a specific person" and more "people in X business sure tend to hear this phrase/joke/etc," which sounds more like Never Heard That One Before (which has a specific note not to include general examples...resulting in its section better resembling Phrase Catcher since it focuses on what specific individuals hear all the time).
