Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the staff to add the trope via this thread
.
This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.
Common problems include:
- Conversation on the Main Page
- Flame Bait
- Squicky content
- Impossible in Real Life
Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.
If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread
) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.
If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.
Before adding to the crowner:
- The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
- There must be support from others in thread.
- Any objections should be addressed.
- Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.
When adding to the crowner:
- Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
- Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
- An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).
In order for a crowner to pass:
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- There must be a 2:1 ratio
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
- Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP or LRLEO index
- Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page
Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.
As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.
Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.
After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.
NRLEP tag:
LRLEO tag:
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]
Notes:
- This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread
.
- Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
- As mentioned here
, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
- The [[noreallife]] tag no longer works. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. Per word of admin
as of 2025, any replacement for this system will not use markup, so these tags can be removed.
- If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the staff to add the trope via this thread
.

I'm pretty sure that a bunch of examples we removed from TheReasonYouSuckSpeech.Web Original were migrated there, like the "Video Game Industry" folder. At the time, we decided that there's two problems with those examples:
- It's complaining by proxy. If someone adds an example to the page, I guarantee you it's a speech that the person agrees with, and the fact that someone else (presumably) posted it is not a sufficiently strong reason, in my eyes, to post a speech about why Fallout 76 is the worst game ever. And then there's the related issue of political Flame Bait when people post speeches aimed at politicians they don't like.
- When you're shouting into the void on the internet, there's very little guarantee that the person it's aimed at will read it. But that's not how the trope is supposed to work. With all of the fictional examples, the intended target is right there listening and reacting to it. But without that, it's not deconstructing all of a person's flaws, it's just shouting into the void.
I would absolutely like to see the page nuked, so it's too bad people actually like it.
If we haven't yet, we could go through the page and see how many examples specifically are misused and/or Flame Bait and that may convince people if it needs to go.
Even disregarding the ROCEJ, if it's not made directly to Trump then it's misuse. With that standard, we could cut the page down a hefty amount.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe. There are some concerning Trump, especially the one made by Mötley Crüe's frontman.

Rock'n'roll never dies! Also, HighfalutinQuelea removed the video game industry folder because it "feels less like epic justice speech and more like Jerkass Manchild Disproportionate Retribution ranting", only for the examples to be immediately readded by KrspaceT. And then Quelea tried to edit war over the Fallout 76 entry. The fact that there's an edit war breaking out on the page is more evidence this page needs to die.

Agreed with cleaning up “The Reason You Suck” Speech— it's specifically in-universe, one character calling out another, not person-on-internet-screaming-into-the-void.
Covered in Star Wars Cleanup, Deadpool, and Web Video sand. I'm not coarse and rough, but I get everywhere.Yeah, I feel part of what makes a "Reason You Suck Speech" is somebody directly addressing the target of their anger and laying out why they suck in front of their face. It's not "this guy sucks and here's why", it's "you suck and here are the reasons why".
So, like interviews or public debates? They probably count. Internet comments or video responses? Probably not.

I think before making any declarations about the page like NREP or NRLEP, we should look over the page to see if any of the contentious examples are even valid examples, since we've established any speech not directed towards the subject - possibly any speech where the subject isn't even present, as that would cut most Internet-based examples - doesn't count.
Just made Sandbox. The Reason You Suck Speech Real Life. So far, the pre-WWI examples can stay, but feel free to help me out.

Rock'n'roll never dies!Should we end the Parents as People crowner? It's got enough votes to put it on the list.
Also, I noticed that Cop Hater has A NRLEP warning in the description but it isn't in the actual list.

Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!
It looks like it was launched preemptively, and it looks like it would be a morality trope. Adding to NoRealLife.Morality Tropes.
Hospital Hottie also has an NRLEP paragraph but is missing from the list.
And yes, you can call Parents as People. Also call Orphanage of Love, since there is consensus not to make that NRLEP.
A chi-square test
for the current votes on Worst News Judgment Ever gave a p-value of 0.62, which means it is far from being conclusive. This entry will take a very long time to reach a conclusion.

I'm back!Worst News Judgement Ever has been on the crowner since Aug 20. At over a month, it is time to call it as a keep - 20:12, 1.67 ratio.
Cop Hater was launched as NRLEP, so there is nothing for us to do here.
Hospital Hottie had its RL section killed by its discussion page back in 2011, back before this thread existed.
EDIT: Ones added Sep 20ish, we can probably call them - Cartoonish Companions (10-2)
Keet (9-4)
Parents as People (9-4)
The two eye type tropes (7-5)
Ones added earlier (with dates placed on crowner):
Rabid Cop (15-12), calling to keep. Aug 20.
Wild Mass Guessing (14-11). Keep. Sep 7.
Bad Cop / Incompetent Cop (14-15). Keep. Aug 20.
Pretty Fly for a White Guy, and the others on the same line. (7-8). Keep. Aug 31.
Empire with a Dark Secret (7-8). Keep. Sep 7.
Killer Cop (7-10). Keep. Aug 22.
Dirty Cop (12-16). Keep. Aug 20.
Salt and Pepper (10-10). Keep. Sep 7.

Honestly I think Cop Hater is more Too Controversial, IMO.
I guess I say that because of all the anti-police protests going on rn. Also because moral dosen't really factor in since the Cop Hater can either be right or wrong as per the description.
EDIT: The vandalism at Fag Hag just alerted me to its real life section. Why do we have this?
EDIT 2: Also closed Parents as People and Orphanage of Love.

Mauve Shirt is the second highest option on the latest crowner.

I don't think Troubled Teen should have been added directly to NRLEP; even if it should be NRLEP, Narrative is not the right category. Removing.
I can't find the discussion that cut the Real Life examples for Hospital Hottie; but looking at it I'm inclined to designate it under Sex.
Edited by LaundryPizza03 on Sep 26th 2020 at 11:06:27 AM
I'm back!Troubled Teen launched directly from TLP as NRLEP. You don't get to arbitrarily delete it. If you want to propose it on the next crowner to remove that status, you can. Or, we can discuss moving it another section.
I have put it back for now.
I would say Too Common. The teen years are really rough times for many.
Yeah, I agree.

Content Warning: My posts may involve my actions dealing with R-rated or Not Safe for Work content. Same for my edit history.True, but I don't think that the trope concept is so broad to cover any minor adolescence-related issue. So I'd be wary to call this Too Common. Definitively not Narrative. G&S possibly? Or make a category for "NRLEP at TLP/YKTTW launch"; that would also make it clear that TLP has the authority to make a trope NRLEP without the need for this forum to approve.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI'd rather we encourage people who launch tropes as NRLEP to explain why they want the trope to be NRLEP. It feels odd to allow people to refuse that entire category without proof that it would become a problem. I assume Troubled Teen would be G+S.
Speaking of Troubled tropes, I nominate Troubled Abuser as a morality trope, since the Real Life section talks about the abuse faced by abusers, cult leaders, and fascist dictators, though luckily it doesn't seem like there's a lot of contentious examples yet.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.
Crown Description:
Vote UP to cut real life examples; vote DOWN to keep. Anything marked DONE has been resolved. In order for a crowner to pass:- Must have been up for a minimum of a week

I believe we should start a cleanup thread for TheReasonYouSuckSpeech.Real Life. It's been downvoted in the crowners twice, but I still think we should remove potholes to NRLEP tropes like Hypocrite in the speeches, esp. for ones concerning politicians.
I started by removing potholes in the speech I added very early in my TV Tropes edit history.
