Real Life section maintenance (including NRLEP and LRLEO) (New Crowner 9/20/25)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the staff to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP or LRLEO index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.

As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag no longer works. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. Per word of admin as of 2025, any replacement for this system will not use markup, so these tags can be removed.
  • If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the staff to add the trope via this thread.

I took care of everything currently on the crowner since everything is past the one week mark and has a sufficient enough ratio to call. Did anyone holler? I don't check the hollers (that and being sick with a cold are why I didn't handle these until now), but some of the other mods usually handle them.

I thought Cassandra Truth is too close to call (-1 from 2:1), hence I suggested for calling that result to be delayed.

[up]Cassandra Truth was barely above the range at which it could have been called, which is why I called it. It was two votes above 2:1 instead of +/- 1 votes.

That said, if anyone else thinks it was premature, I can undo the cut and we can give it a bit more time.

OK, I went ahead and restored CassandraTruth.Real Life (I had to do it manually because the page restoration tool still isn't working) and removed it from the NLREP index, and I'll remove the "CLOSED" tag from the crowner. We can give it a bit more time now.

Let's give it until Tuesday to see where it goes from here, since the crowner's header says to wait a couple of days.

Cassandra Truth is still above consensus range after the time frame I gave, so calling in favor of NRLEP.

And yes, I would say The Atoner would count as a morality trope. (But I'm saying that part with the mod hat off, unlike the first part of this post.)

Alot of the RL examples on Dirty Old Monk are general examples and can be cut on those grounds.

I don't know if this is the place to take these, but from Emily Bett Rickards.

  • Ascended Extra: Her role on Arrow wasn't meant to be very large or developed — in the comics, Felicity is barely more than a footnote of a character — but the producers (and later the viewers) reacted to her and her chemistry with Stephen Amell so positively that she was brought back with greater importance, becoming the third person to join Team Arrow, not to mention Oliver Queen's love interest...effectively pushing aside his longtime romantic partner from the comics in the process.
  • The Cast Show Off: Zig-Zagged. She was trained in musical theater, but she never sung or/and danced in the Arrowverse shows on-screen. She and her Arrow co-stars sang "Summer Nights" on the show's Season One behind the scenes video, with her and John Barrowman's voices standing out.
  • Classically Trained Extra: She was trained in musical theater, but she mainly played bit roles before playing Felicity Smoak (and even that was supposed to be one too).
  • Creator Backlash: She's aware in some aspect of her character now being considered a Base-Breaking Character for the entire Arrowverse after the Seasonal Rot of Arrow Seasons 3, 4, and 6 along with the infamous ending to the Crisis on Earth-X Crisis Crossover. However, Rickards' comments in interviews have alluded that she's just as frustrated as the audience is about her character's mishandling. Notably, she was angry about Felicity's disability storyline being quickly brushed aside (as she had even done tons of research about disabilities and was excited to represent the individuals in question). Furthermore, she was disappointed about the Darker and Edgier material she was asked to shoulder during Arrow Seasons 3 and 4 (since she felt that the more angsty storylines she was given didn't play to her strengths).
  • Disappeared Dad: Strangely common across her roles.
  • She Also Did:
    • She was The Narrator for the audiobook version of "The Wicked Ones," a short story set in the universe of The Mortal Instruments.
    • She's also continued her theater work outside of her television roles, gaining significant critical praise when she starred in the lead role of Zayd Dorn's Reborning at the Annex Theater in Vancouver during early 2018.
  • Nice Girl: The many detractors of Felicity Smoak seem to consider Rickards herself an Unacceptable Target, with even the harshest perspectives given regarding Rickard herself being that she's "a lackluster actress, but still a wonderful human being." Most seem to pity her for having to play such an unpopular character instead. This reputation isn't that undeserved either, with her having started a T-shirt campaign to help earn money for auto-immune diseases-related charities in 2016 and coming up with a new $250,000 scholarship program for Vancouver Film School in 2019, both being funded largely out of her own pocket.

The last one seems like it personal trope but overall a lot of this reads very weird to me and I can't put my finger on it. Maybe its because a lot of it reads like an excuse to complain about a single character and show which can just be on the Arrow pages. Is this even the pace to take this?

I don't know if there is a Creator page cleanup, or an Arrowverse cleanup at that, and I don't think this is exactly the place for it.

Buuuuuut

The Nice Girl is a super easy cut. We don't trope real life people as if they were characters, and that's all that is, along with a helping of Arrowverse bitching. The rest are trivia tropes or tropes about her characters in general, which is fine. There is a complaining streak (and man do some people hate Felicity Smoak), maybe take that over to the complaining thread.

Regarding Keep Real Life Examples, I think it should be checked before bringing something up here. I'm not saying such decisions are set in stone (after all, we did change Never Live It Down from having No Recent Examples, Please! restrictions on real life examples to being fully No Real Life Examples, Please!, though that was done by TRS and not this thread), but it would be a way of telling whether a given page has already been brought up.

Also, regarding Nice Guy, that's been NRLEP for quite a while (I'm pretty sure it was on there before I started posting on the forums), so it's a kill-on-sight thing when applied to real people.

Benevolent Boss really should not have any real life examples. The idea of the trope is that the CEO is completely good and benevolent in nature, which makes this a morality trope and thus not applicable to real life. If Mean Boss is NRLP, than this should be too.

Especially since several examples on the list do have a history of doing shadier shit and what not, such as Disney, which has a long history of screwing over creators and employees (which even the page acknowledges) on top of doing all sorts of notoriously shady and outright corrupted shit, such as refusing to hire female animators and accusing and blacklisting employees due to fears of them being communists.

I just saw Love Makes You Crazy on a Creator page, which feels very inappropriate. The only examples on the page are medical terminology which could be summarized in the description, as I'd rather play it safe and not call real people "crazy." I'd label it "Too Controversial" or "Gossip."

The same page also has a Buxom Is Better example, which has real life examples that I worry may veer into creepiness. Would this be a "Sex Trope"?
