Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

The pages for Down the Rabbit Hole, Tear Jerker, Nightmare Fuel and YMMV in particular, heavily toe the line between troping the videos' content and troping the real life people/reactions to the people in said videos. It's honestly rather creepy, especially with how gushy some of the entries are towards the videomaker.

Dunno what to do about those pages for now. I only cut an unnecessary Even the Guys Want Him in Estrogen Brigade.

On another note, I call O.O.C. Is Serious Business.

[up]Bittersweet Ending's ratio is exactly the same as O.O.C. Is Serious Business's. Is it too soon to call it?

Meanwhile, Nice to the Waiter, Poke the Poodle, and Sleep Deprivation Punishment are stalling. I'll throw in my two cents.

  • Nice to the Waiter (5 up, 4 down): Limit real life examples to general ones (which may be moved to the Analysis tab since Examples Are Not General) or invoked examples.
  • Poke the Poodle (4 up, 4 down): I'm the one who proposed this, but the response is neutral. Let me hear your counterarguments.
  • Sleep Deprivation Punishment (3 up, 8 down): If any real life examples come up that violate the content policy, I'm willing to re-evaluate this one. That said, we've seen squicky stuff like this before.

I don't see how this point in the real life section of Dark World qualifies; it looks it's describing a world that's literally dark, not an evil, twisted version of another:

  • Some research shows that rogue planets, those that wander across interstellar space instead of orbiting a star, could be habitable assuming they had both a thick atmosphere that retained the little available heat and geothermal processes consequence of either radioactive decay or tidal forces induced by a large satellite extensive enough. Those orbiting brown dwarfsnote  could too, but the conditions for them are very stringent.

[up]All of the real life examples sound like misuse. Dark World is about a twisted mirror of the main characters' world (like the page image). This would mean a twisted version of Earth, which would require magic or sci-fi stuff to happen, thus it's impossible in real life.

I agree Dark World should be NRLEP due to being impossible in real-life and the three real-life examples sound like misuse. The first and third one are about something hypothetical and the second one is misuse since places in our world at night, while they can be unsettling, isn't a warped or twisted version of our world.

I'll note that there's a category for NRLEP tropes that are impossible in real life. A subpage for Eldritch Abomination got sent to the Permanent Red Link Club in addition to getting the trope filed under NRLEP.

[up]Exaggerated descriptions of things that aren't abominations at all, such as animals that are merely unusual. The subpage's Permanent Red Link Club entry covers this, and I'm pretty sure the Wayback Machine has it archived.

Edit: Late 2010 archive, which was the earliest I could find. Speculation and violations of Examples Are Not Arguable abound.

Another edit: The TRS thread that got it cut.

The page not long before it got cut.

"No listing of individual persons in this section, no matter how unattractive you may find them." That says it all.

Can we add Character Rerailment to the crowner below, since Character Derailment is NRLEP?

Also, how come we never updated the thread name?

We got rid of the Real Life section for Mean Character, Nice Actor for some reason; we should get rid of the image too then.

[up] I think that one was mod-approved, according to the main Image Pickin' thread.

[up]One of the main reasons was that the subpage violated the trope's existing In-Universe Examples Only status.

As for the image, it was indeed mod-approved; the same is true of the similarly NRLEP Foreign Queasine.

Because it can be applied to pretty much EVERY actor who portrayed a hateful or evil character.

Sleep Deprivation Punishment is green-lit to have RL examples.

I know I said I would move examples from the TLP draft if it gets approved. However, I'm reluctant to do so because some of them don't have enough context and one is very ramble-y. Others fit more to the super trope Sleep Deprivation.

If anyone wants to dig them up and post them on the page, here is a link to the TLP discussion.

No Name Given should be No Real Life Examples, Please! since it refers to instances where a character's name is not given in a work's narrative, meaning it doesn't apply to real life.

I close the votes for Poke the Poodle and Nice to the Waiter. Both tropes failed to reunite the votes for banning real life examples.

[up][up]I think No Name Given could apply to things/people not given names, or whose names were lost to history.

I removed the rogue planets example from Dark World. Should the other two be removed too?

Yeah. A hypothetical example isn't one, and the world at night is just taking it literally while missing the point of the trope, as well as the part of the description that explicitly excludes it.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
