Real Life section maintenance (including NRLEP and LRLEO) (New Crowner 9/20/25)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the staff to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP or LRLEO index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.

As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag no longer works. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. Per word of admin as of 2025, any replacement for this system will not use markup, so these tags can be removed.
  • If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the staff to add the trope via this thread.

Perhaps Pet the Dog should be expanded to include non-villains as well, then?

Regardless, Morality Tropes cut both ways with regards to NRLEP status. So that's no excuse IMO.

I have to say that I intensely dislike the practice of condemning tropes based on tropes they are related to. Each one should be considered on its own merits, IMO.

[up][up]But is Photo Op with the Dog really a morality trope? It doesn't really say that "X needs to improve their image because they are a bad guy", it says "X needs to improve their image because they have a reputation for being a bad guy". That, to me, sounds more like gossip than actual moral shaming.

So maybe it should be NRLEP on the grounds of attracting gossip, but I'd like to see actual evidence that it does before voting.

Pet the Dog already includes non-villains; the description uses Jerkasses, villains, and AntiHeroes as examples of the sorts of characters that might be given a Pet the Dog to soften their rough edges, but doesn't limit the definition to only those types of characters.

I voted up Pet the Dog because I don't think it's a trope a used in Real Life. It's just something that happens. Without a narrative, it doesn't have the point it does. Photo Op with the Dog, on the other hand, is a constructed narrative by itself.

Question: why is Character Alignment classified as Flame Bait when it only really allows in-universe examples anyway?

Theatre_Maven_3695 from Ontario, Canada (4 Score & 7 Years Ago) Relationship Status: Oh my word! I'm gay!
#6008: Jan 23rd 2017 at 9:53:14 PM

Because people can't stop bitching and debating circles round even the In Universe examples. Characters can't be fit neatly into such strict categories without being almost painfully one dimensional anyway, so it will always spark toxic debates, in universe or out.

As they've been doing nothing but climbing up past the 2:1 minimum vote ratio by fairly healthy margins, I'm calling Death by Despair and Hello Nurse for NRLEP.

Pending:

Safe, Sane, and Consensual is probably not going to recover from that big a deficit, but I'll wait another day before calling to keep RL examples, to make sure it doesn't drastically change.

All Issues Are Political Issues are both listed under "Gossip and stereotypes" and "Tropes that attract flamebait, complaining, and natter". Is this necessary or redundant?

Redundant. I'd say Flame Bait is the bigger issue, if not the only one (and the "stereotypes" designation likely came from a misinterpretation of "All X are Y" as being equivalent to "stereotype" (which it often is, yes, but not in this case).

Was Gratuitous Nazis ever run thru here? (BTW, downvoting it for being just arbitrarily added to the crowner.) Or was it launched NRLEP and just never put on the index? And what's the point of the noreallife markup tag if it stopped working as intended years ago?

EDIT: Looks like it was meant to be NRLEP right out of the gate, but nobody bothered to add it to the index. Oversight, maybe?

Someone added Gossipy Hens with no mention.

Regardless of its results in the crowner, 5 of the 7 existing RL examples are general examples and one is a single person instead of a group. So, most of it will absolutely be going away.

@Fighteer: That isn't a sufficient explanation for why the rules would seem to disallow Character Alignment itself as tropable for work pages for RPGs that include it.

Erm? The rules don't disallow that. They permit it, in fact. If the work uses alignments canonically, and specifies alignments for its characters, then the tropes may be used with the In-Universe tag. If the work uses Character Alignment in general, such as the work page for an RPG, then it can be used as a discrete trope, again with the In-Universe tag.

Never My Fault is a trope about jerks, and it's RL section blatantly violates the Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgement several times.

If Gratuitous Nazis will be added, then which folder would you prefer? It is very close between morality, gossip, and narrative.

Also, I feel very suspicious about Psychological Projection because tropers could potentially use it for complaining and Take Thats against people of certain political groups and others, which will immediately degenerate into Flamebait.

I'd say Gratuitous Nazis would fit best under the Narrative folder, since the trope is explicitly about writers throwing Nazis in for the sake of the story.note

As for Psychological Projection, "could cause problems" doesn't seem enough for it to merit a trip through the crowner, IMO.

I will vote down anything with an argument that amounts to "could potentially cause problems". If there aren't any proven problems, there aren't any problems.

I really don't think we need an example list for Resident Freak... which it has right now. Don't think it warrants a NRLEP tag, just a culling of what's there ATM.
