Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the staff to add the trope via this thread
.
This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.
Common problems include:
- Conversation on the Main Page
- Flame Bait
- Squicky content
- Impossible in Real Life
Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.
If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread
) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.
If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.
Before adding to the crowner:
- The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
- There must be support from others in thread.
- Any objections should be addressed.
- Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.
When adding to the crowner:
- Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
- Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
- An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).
In order for a crowner to pass:
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- There must be a 2:1 ratio
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
- Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP or LRLEO index
- Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page
Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.
As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.
Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.
After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

Notes:
- This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread
.
- Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
- As mentioned here
, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
- The [[noreallife]] tag no longer works. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. Per word of admin
as of 2025, any replacement for this system will not use markup, so these tags can be removed.
- If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the staff to add the trope via this thread
.

Looking more closely, the page I mentioned previously needs more reworking than just removing NRLEP tropes, well beyond the scope of this thread. Unfortunately, no new TRS threads are being accepted at the moment, so I guess I'll have to put it on hold for now.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpCalling Surprisingly Sudden Death: Added 25th Oct '15 at 04:01:16 PM, 12:0
Not So Different technically meets the requirements for NRLEP, but being at exactly a 2:1 ratio I'm waiting another 24 hours before calling it. Currently at 10 yes and 5 no votes.
As for Blatant Lies, should we make only certain RL topics prohibited? Personally, I find that kind of iffy, seeing it leading to all sorts of "Why is Topic X prohibited, but not Topic Y?" complaining.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpI'm good with deleting all of them, despite a few of them being funny and not offensive. Mostly the ones about getting around bureaucracy. And the Swedish TV one is really an urban legend.

Check out my fanfiction! We don't need official warnings or announcements for every single page we cut or trim. Then again, this thread is official.
I've not looked into it, but I believe there was a great big mess on that page. It's often the case that Real Life subpages are full of natter, generic "examples", and other problems. There's also the issue that any tragic, semi-tragic, or pseudo-tragic event would fit, which makes for so many examples that it just becomes too many to list. And that's aside from the small fact that it's basically Troper Tales, which we don't allow.
Check out my fanfiction! If Not So Different wins, this should be added to Flamebait/Complaining/Natter magnet because it is not limited to morality.
As it says on the NRLEP page, a trope may fit under multiple categories, but it will only be listed once. In the case of NSD, it's explicitly about villains and heros, so "morality" is fine.
All your safe space are belong to Trump
On Not So Different (and it's not necessarily saying something's immoral, it's saying that two groups with supposedly different moralities are, well, more similar than it seems, isn't it?). Here's an idea: Instead of removing an example because of POTENTIAL flamebait or natter, shouldn't we wait and see if it actually becomes a problem?

The thing about Not So Different is that it's about someone calling the similarity out. Most of the examples in the Real Life section are just about random tropers pointing out some similarities out between various groups. A lot of it are about superficial ideas that fall head-first into Concepts Are Cheap. It basically has the same symptoms as Unfortunate Implications had before it needed citations, but the page is smaller.
There's also less a potential for natter and more actual natter already there.
Check out my fanfiction!Looks like it doesn't matter now, as NSD fails to meet the vote ratio requirement.
Anyway, calling Dehumanization for NRLEP: Added 27th Oct '15 at 06:51:38 AM, 3.67:1 (14).
Blatant Lies meets the requirements for NRLEP, but as with Not So Different earlier it's close enough that I'm going to give it another day before calling, to see where it goes. Currently 2.25:1, 13 votes total.
Calling Not So Different to keep RL examples. Added 25th Oct '15 at 04:55:01 PM, 1.83:1 (17)
All your safe space are belong to TrumpI don't think Not So Different is stable enough to call. It was on the requirement not long ago, and then two votes after it's a single vote below.
Check out my fanfiction!Changing the topic, Matzo Fever is twice in the No Real Life Examples, Please! page: in "sexuality tropes" and "gossip and stereotypes". Which page that trope should stay?
At the time of this post, Blatant Lies is at 1.8:1 (9y/5n), with one more "no" vote than the last time I mentioned it.
Going once...
Going twice...
All your safe space are belong to TrumpNow at 11y/7n (1.57:1) for Blatant Lies. I don't think that one's going to come back, so calling it to keep RL examples.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpI suggest Crushing the Populace, because it's a flame war magnet and is common in Real Life.
It already has a "no RL" note in the description, but hasn't been run through the crowner yet. However, I see no reason to not make that note official policy for that page. +1 for a crowner slot.
[edit] Just as an aside, if you're going to make an entry on the crowner, please just say "adding to the crowner" instead of posting so that it looks like you're looking for more input before adding.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpNot So Different has gotten another vote, putting it back over the limit. I maintain that it was called preemtively. Or wasn't called for arbitrary reasons.
Check out my fanfiction!Crushing the Populace seems applicable for real life (or maybe too common).
Why was Bread and Circuses NRLEP?
I'm not real clear on what Bread and Circuses means, but both of those seem to be premised on the idea that the government is an Evil Empire, which would be a morality judgement.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.
