Wow. They hit 3 million.
And based on past kickstarters, I wouldn't be surprised if it doubles that (or more) before it's over.
Can you make an open world game for just $2 million?
No, we cannot make an open world game for $2 million. Shenmue will be produced using both the funds raised from the Kickstarter and through other funding sources already secured by Ys Net Inc. We are very sorry, but due to contractual obligations, details of outside investments will not be disclosed.
New stretch goals added.
Yeah, I was thinking that would be the case, not unlike Bloodstained.
I will never stop pushing that game for Summer Slam.
I think EVERY Kickstarter game is like that to a degree. Mighty No. 9 had to get more money because the millions they gained weren't enough to make the game. Most of a Kickstarter's budget goes to marketing, with actual investments to make the game coming from elsewhere.
Plus the more people they hire and the more stretch goals they add, especially with things like shirts and tier-specific rewards, those cost even more to plan and make.
Thia article explain it pretty well. Just ignore the clickbaity title. http://www.polygon.com/2015/5/19/8624665/big-indie-kickstarters-are-killing-actual-indies

Yu Suzuki should be on Reddit this Friday: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ysnet/shenmue-3/posts/1268191
Price of original Shenmue skyrockets following announcement of Shenmue III.
The game was selling for about $30 on eBay prior to the announcement and now it's at about $100 and seems to be climbing.
$200,000 seems like a lot for a single mission. and quest.
I'm hoping he'll announce a Linux/Mac stretch goal at some point. The planned engine should be able to handle it.
It's a little vague, but it seems like Baisha Village will become physically larger as well, which seems like a more plausible cost. At least, that's my interpretation.
I don't know how much Yu Suzuki & co. are going to match the previous games but both of them had their own sets of characters for each area and each of them, including every individual shop and reastaurant had their own background music and ambiance sound.
That AMA has revealed some interesting info which was then reported by other news outlets, namely that in order for this game to be the full open-world experience fans expect from the series, the devs will need $10 million to make it work. Many have already criticized this because of the suspicions around who's funding what and all that, while others realize that the money they already have was probably never going to be enough to fully get it done in the first place.
What do you guys think?

Tycho and Gabe of Penny Arcade react to the news of Shenmue 3.

Um, late to the party there, buddy.
(Notices the comic was from 2 weeks ago.)
Well, I feel silly.
So the last update was on the possibility of an English voice track.
Now, I'm actually one of those guys who prefers English and I'd probably go with that if I play it. It's just easier to watch cutscenes when I don't have to read them, plus I like to multitask.
Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut given how much it'll probably cost them for something I'd imagine only a fraction of the players will want, I honestly think it shouldn't be anything resembling a priority. Like seriously. The very last thing if they have money left over. Because seriously, if someone cares enough about Shenmue to back this, statistically speaking they'll want the dialogue in Japanese.
It's not like the original dub had much of a budget.
Keiji Okayasu, the director of the Shenmue 1 and 70% of Shenmue 2 is joining the production of Shenmue 3.
Super bump of necromancy because:
Shenmue 3 will be published by Deep Silver.
According to Yu Suzuki:
Also, if you're off to Gamescom this year, Yu Suzuki will be hosting two Meet & Greets in the public area Hall 9.1 Stand B011/C0101 on Wednesday, August 23 (6:30pm to 7:30pm) and Thursday, August 24 (12:30pm to 1:30pm).
Deep Silver did Mighty No 9 right? Ruh Roh!
From Gamescom 2017 comes our first look at Shenmue III on PS4!
The good news is the environments are GORGEOUS. The bad news is the facial animations are...nonexistent.

Its not being released till the second half of next yea,r so they have plenty of time to fix them.
That looks awful.
At this point I'm wondering what Shenmue can do that Yakuza hasn't done already.
