NEW BADGES!

Go To

The new TVTropes app (in beta testing) has resurrected The Badge Shop and moderators can now give out award badges via the app and anyone who uses the app can add any other badge to their account for free! Badges are viewable in all sections of the site on the app (Forums, Queries, Discussions, TLP and Reviews)

The new app should be available to the general public within the next couple of weeks!

NEW BADGE SUBMISSIONS:

  • Users can submit designs for new badges for review via this thread. If approved by the moderators and the admins any moderator can then add that new badge to the badge shop via the Badge Shop Manager.
    • New badges should be of higher quality and not appear pixelated like current older badges, we can now upload higher quality images for them.
    • New badges should have a transparent background so they don't show a different color background when on night vision.

     old post

(Started this thread based on this thread/post.)

For those that are unaware, one of the ideas for bringing in some money from the forum-side of the wiki is to sell "badges" (sort-of like the Herald one) that you can buy and put up as part of your "gingerbread" .

The shop can be found by clicking on the "basket" at the top of any post. There is a 1 USD -> 1Þ exchange rate.

Each person who buys a badge will also be able to customize the hover text that people see for their particular badges. (Note: Only plain text is usable for a caption. Potholes and other wiki formatting will not work)

There are three slots under the avatar and above the "title" space to display them. You will be able to get to your gallery (where you can chose which ones you want to show and their order) by clicking on these slots.

If you wish to participate in making the badges, they need to be a max of 24x24 pix.

The only things we are completely keeping out of the store are symbols that are generally associated with any religion (the Yin-Yang and such are more known for other reasons), gender/sex/sexual orientation badges, and ones that infringe on copyrights. If you see things that you think do infringe, you probably don't have to worry about it. Those are images that don't match their originals (the heart container), are free-to-use, or the original copyright owner has lost their privilege to go after the "offending" images by not going after them in the past.

Please use this thread for everything badge-related.

The rest of this post is taken up by badge ideas, links to badges people have made, and default text ideas. NOTE: The list has not been updated in quite a while (and will probably never be) now that badge ideas/submissions appear naturally in the thread and go strait into the shop.

When it was just England and Scotland, the Scots actually made their own version with the cross of St Andrew on top, rather than that of St George, since they considered him more important.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

On my father's side of the family, I'm majorly of Irish and Welsh descent. I'm always particular as to which part of the British Commonwealth I mean. tongue

That said, I did marry someone whose father is English...

Oh, right, badges, those.

Hmm... would a breastplate (no, not that kind) be good? Folks like armor almost as much as they like swords. A cool helmet or two (like a full faceplate, both European and Japanese style) also might be popular.

How about gender avatars? Male and female. Would help sort out the Pronoun Trouble here on the fora.

Eh, I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm not going to blow two and a half tropies, not to mention one of my three badge slots (especially when I already have four I want to display) just to notify folks about my genitals. I think it'd be more productive to allow a male/female/other/none symbol appear just to the right of the screen name on the forums - you'd want to ask Eddie about it.

Personally, while I'm unabashedly male, I like seeing just how often people think I'm female online when I don't even try the Guy In Real Life routine (it happens way more often than you first would think). So I won't really bother to identify myself, even if given the chance to do so on the forum.

Besides, I do make it clear on my troper page.

Bump.

I really, really should get back on my laptop soon. I've got at least half a dozen badge ideas, and... I guess I'd at least like to see how they turn out before Shima or somebody does them first. :/

I know there is already a music badge, but I don't think a piano keys badge would necessarily be a bad thing. I made a couple really easily, and if either one of them is good, tell me which one is better.

The first one is better; it's nice to have the key distinctions be lighter than the image border.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

The second one is there so that the keys would all be the same width, just so you know.

EDIT: How's this one look?

I want to say, "Zoom out and put more keys in there," on account of it looking kinda like a box with two popsicles in it, but that would mean that most of the badge is negative space, which would look weird. :/ D'you think you could zoom out a little bit, keep the keys on the bottom, and put a brown or black bar over them, like the top of a piano/keyboard?

Naturally, I'm ninja'd by, like, five people.

Another possibility would be to make thinner keys to get more on there. I know it would lead to fridge logic as to what spider was actually using said keyboard, but it would fit more keys on there.

Something like this, perhaps?

It would be hard to get a border around that though, since that's already stretching the limit of how small I can make things.

I'm afraid that one isn't very clear. What about four white keys and 3 black — from F to B?

Sadly, that only works at 24 x 23, so I have a white stripe at the end... :(

But here we are:

That looks good. To make it better, try adding a border at the top and bottom, in keeping with the current side ones. As the image ˙as vertical lines, it seems "stretched" from top to bottom when it's not, so that would help limit the image. Also to counteract that, you could shave a pixel off the bottom like you have on the side — 23x23 won't be noticed unless a mod wears it in a pink post. smile

[down] I'm afraid all of those strike me as having too much black on top. The image is dominated by it. Key-wise, I prefer the first and second to the third, as that one doesn't ever exist on a piano keyboard. Gray/black edge lines on the second/first (respectively) would be good

Confi's version is my favourite so far, too. (Starman's last one is almost as good but the black space is kind of annoying and it bugs me that the edge keys aren't outlined... even though if they were it would look just as strange.)
