NEW BADGES!

Go To

The new TVTropes app (in beta testing) has resurrected The Badge Shop and moderators can now give out award badges via the app and anyone who uses the app can add any other badge to their account for free! Badges are viewable in all sections of the site on the app (Forums, Queries, Discussions, TLP and Reviews)

The new app should be available to the general public within the next couple of weeks!

NEW BADGE SUBMISSIONS:

  • Users can submit designs for new badges for review via this thread. If approved by the moderators and the admins any moderator can then add that new badge to the badge shop via the Badge Shop Manager.
    • New badges should be of higher quality and not appear pixelated like current older badges, we can now upload higher quality images for them.
    • New badges should have a transparent background so they don't show a different color background when on night vision.

     old post

(Started this thread based on this thread/post.)

For those that are unaware, one of the ideas for bringing in some money from the forum-side of the wiki is to sell "badges" (sort-of like the Herald one) that you can buy and put up as part of your "gingerbread" .

The shop can be found by clicking on the "basket" at the top of any post. There is a 1 USD -> 1Þ exchange rate.

Each person who buys a badge will also be able to customize the hover text that people see for their particular badges. (Note: Only plain text is usable for a caption. Potholes and other wiki formatting will not work)

There are three slots under the avatar and above the "title" space to display them. You will be able to get to your gallery (where you can chose which ones you want to show and their order) by clicking on these slots.

If you wish to participate in making the badges, they need to be a max of 24x24 pix.

The only things we are completely keeping out of the store are symbols that are generally associated with any religion (the Yin-Yang and such are more known for other reasons), gender/sex/sexual orientation badges, and ones that infringe on copyrights. If you see things that you think do infringe, you probably don't have to worry about it. Those are images that don't match their originals (the heart container), are free-to-use, or the original copyright owner has lost their privilege to go after the "offending" images by not going after them in the past.

Please use this thread for everything badge-related.

The rest of this post is taken up by badge ideas, links to badges people have made, and default text ideas. NOTE: The list has not been updated in quite a while (and will probably never be) now that badge ideas/submissions appear naturally in the thread and go strait into the shop.

Maybe we should make it a color that police box's actually were, historically. Though a purple box would be a nice variant.

I see you've made your decision. Now let's see you enforce it.

Blue and teal are the historical colours. We could go teal. Red is something else entirely.

Not quite the right colour. Hold on.

Red is the traditional Scottish police box colour, still visible in Glasgow (one of the last places where Mackenzie Trench kiosks like that are still standing).

Still think the chainsword is the more pressing issue, though, given Games Workshop's claim to ownership and their track record for taking legal action. Even if you could successfully argue that their claim to the rights is illegitimate, I kinda doubt TVT has the funds to fight a court battle over this given that the point of the badges in the first place was to raise cash to support the site.

[down]The Post Office/Giles Gilbert Scott kiosk series, yeah. Those look different, though.

Well, I've made my point I think. Do what you think best.

Here's the teal. Red tends to be more associated with phone booths though. Not police boxes.

I find that to be more of a 'jade' or 'turquoise' myself, which is why I had such a bright blue color...

My apologies for the unfamiliarity with British memorabilia.

I'd prefer a red police box.

EDIT: On another note, with Herald badges, will the ones that are displayed on the forums we herald be removed due to redundancy?

There's no reason why we can't have both.

As for replacement, is there any way for the Fast One to remove the blue boxes and refund the tropies?

[up] I'd think not, since not every herald is going to want to wear the herald badge on them at all times. You only get three slots, after all.

[up] We're working on that.

Herald badges won't be removed because they only show up in the right forum. And we aren't requiring heralds to wear their herald badges.

It's not a good idea to put the chainsword in the badge store because Games Workshop is known to sue little, unknown forums than here.

I'm in favor of red and teal police boxes, side by side. And I still agree the chainswords should be removed and replaced by a katana or something.

I don't feel we should be in the 'eliminate all references to something because someone might file a frivolous lawsuit' camp.

I could sue TV Tropes over literally anything I wanted. It would get promptly laughed out of court.

Well, the chainswords we can just change the name to serrated sword. They aren't actually chainswords in anything but name.

I'd just take the damn thing down, but admittedly I'm not a Warhammer fan.

I fink, when the amount of actual danger from an action is uncertain, but the worst case scenario of it is, like, really bad, and the best isn't really much to write home about in the first place, one should just consider the action itself really unlucky, as in bad juju, and not do it. This is the sort of reason why people wear seatbelts.

Best case scenario: Games Workshop never even notices, the forum gets another few dollars from the badge that could very well be made by just about any other badge, and everything's about status quo. Worst case scenario, we get sued off of the face of the internet because Games Workshop is a lot of bastards. If we take it down, the best case scenario is pretty much unaltered, and the worst is demoted to something less virtually lethal.

I say we drop the effin' chainsword.

Agreed with Shima's suggestion - we can just call them serrated swords. I've seen those in plenty of other games.

Y'know, I just thought of something Games Workshop could do if they felt like being really sneaky: They could ask a few Tropers who have bought the badge what it is, see nine dot repeating of 'em answer, "Chainsword, yo! Cost me about a buck!" decide that's evidence or summat, and then sue the wiki into the ground. You can Call a Rabbit a "Smeerp", but if somebody's got a copyright on rabbits, you can call it "the reason I'm broke."

It's like the TARDIS thing. Doesn't matter what you call it, it's still a chainsword and people are buying them because they are chainswords.

They aren't even that cool and could easily be replaced. There isn't a reason to keep them around.

I see you've made your decision. Now let's see you enforce it.

All right, mods have been talking and we've decided that we want to look at what can be done with 48x48 badges. Just graphic examples.

Things that look a bit less like the pixel art we can manage at the current size.
