NEW BADGES!

Go To

The new TVTropes app (in beta testing) has resurrected The Badge Shop and moderators can now give out award badges via the app and anyone who uses the app can add any other badge to their account for free! Badges are viewable in all sections of the site on the app (Forums, Queries, Discussions, TLP and Reviews)

The new app should be available to the general public within the next couple of weeks!

NEW BADGE SUBMISSIONS:

  • Users can submit designs for new badges for review via this thread. If approved by the moderators and the admins any moderator can then add that new badge to the badge shop via the Badge Shop Manager.
    • New badges should be of higher quality and not appear pixelated like current older badges, we can now upload higher quality images for them.
    • New badges should have a transparent background so they don't show a different color background when on night vision.

     old post

(Started this thread based on this thread/post.)

For those that are unaware, one of the ideas for bringing in some money from the forum-side of the wiki is to sell "badges" (sort-of like the Herald one) that you can buy and put up as part of your "gingerbread" .

The shop can be found by clicking on the "basket" at the top of any post. There is a 1 USD -> 1Þ exchange rate.

Each person who buys a badge will also be able to customize the hover text that people see for their particular badges. (Note: Only plain text is usable for a caption. Potholes and other wiki formatting will not work)

There are three slots under the avatar and above the "title" space to display them. You will be able to get to your gallery (where you can chose which ones you want to show and their order) by clicking on these slots.

If you wish to participate in making the badges, they need to be a max of 24x24 pix.

The only things we are completely keeping out of the store are symbols that are generally associated with any religion (the Yin-Yang and such are more known for other reasons), gender/sex/sexual orientation badges, and ones that infringe on copyrights. If you see things that you think do infringe, you probably don't have to worry about it. Those are images that don't match their originals (the heart container), are free-to-use, or the original copyright owner has lost their privilege to go after the "offending" images by not going after them in the past.

Please use this thread for everything badge-related.

The rest of this post is taken up by badge ideas, links to badges people have made, and default text ideas. NOTE: The list has not been updated in quite a while (and will probably never be) now that badge ideas/submissions appear naturally in the thread and go strait into the shop.

Good job on the chess pieces RA.

I now realize there's one major ASOIAF badge I missed. House Greyjoy. Think it's possible to do a good squid badge?

Up to the staff to use or not; won't hurt my feelings. Eddie wanted GoT badges tho.

You can't copyright heraldry.

Then let's see how well putting up the Hogwarts seal goes up legally.

There's a difference from being inspired by real heraldry to copying the designs of a modern fantasy series.

^^^ Oh, sorry, didn't realize that; the color is important too. The Greyjoy sigil isn't a squid, it's a gold squid on a black field.

Well I was always talking about making the badges look heraldic.

Hmm... for chess badges:

  • Pawn: "Me only this in game of life." "Mooks of the chess world."
  • Rook: "A home that really is a castle." "Bringing new meaning to Advancing Wall of Doom."
  • Knight: "Chivalry has no place on the field of battle." "A knight's true privelege is never being truly pinned."
  • Bishop: "Moves along with the angles." "One moves in light, one moves in dark; both move to victory."
  • Queen: "A woman's work is never done." "The game world's original Lady of War."
  • King: "A monarch's strength becomes obvious at the end." "It's good to be the king."

Aware of that, but was unaware you meant particular heraldry, which involves particular colors.

I think someone might prefer a dragon badge to a Targaryan badge.

Question: Could we get a "new" category in the badge shop or some other way to readily pick out which badges are new?

Did anything ever come of the double-width badges idea?

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

Going on my laptop for the first time in ages. Might work on badges while I'm on it.

Three things:

  1. "Carpal" is still misspelled in the purple heart alt text thing.
  2. There should probably be a link to your badge collection in your Edit Forum Profile page.
  3. I've colored the werewolf badge, tried a side version, and colored that. Any of 'em look like werewolves (or even just wolves) yet?

I still like the "strait on" view, but the side will likely be more recognizable if you can get the proportions right. Right now there is not enough "bridge" to the nose. It looks like the nose and the top of the head are both on the same line/angle when the head should be a bit wider and rounder.

There's a one-pixel difference between the snout and the brow. I'm not sure if it'll look better if I make it two dots. I think I like the head-on version more, too, now that it's colored.

Can't really edit it now anyways, as the laptop's off for the night. Probably be on it again tomorrow, though.

(I also took the original black head-on one with the teeth, took the moon away and made the teeth red, but figured nobody's going to want a red-eyed vampire bat head when Batman's logo is all over the place and we all know we can't sell that.)

Here is a left eye to go with the other one:

How both together would look:

Something designed to be two badges would be cool.
