Now, would these badges be buyable exclusives or will there be some free ones ala achievements?

Any badges you get for free would probably be handed out by the administration as a recognition for services to the Wiki.

I could give a couple of names right now of tropers who deserve to have something extra next to their name to show people that their work in TRS, IP and the Wiki itself means a lot to us.

Except that of course I won't give you any hints.

Yank the Dog's Chain much, Best Of? tongue

Anyway, badges in general sound like a good idea. Don't see a point to a "I've been here long" badge, but the general idea is what we need. It'll be a good and (hopefully) profitable feature.

Yeah, "I financially support this wiki" badge might be nice. I know the Allspark forums can put people in the "supporter" category instead of simply "member".

We have a great deal of discussion about you guys in the supersecret mod fora where we discuss things like new mod and other staff nominations.

Oh, how I wish that I could share some of the things we've said about you there... Except that I don't.

Can we keep the discussion of badges strictly to "badges you pay to give yourself" and "badges you pay to give other people"? This is, after all, a thread about raising money for the wiki, and implementing any sort of karma system without paying doesn't do that, while implementing a karma system you have to pay for, I think the idea is, avoids the pitfalls associated with a lot of them.

Just noodling this out: I'm hearing that we want three kinds of badge inventory. One about donation levels (gold, silver, bronze); one for badges to be used as gifts (attaboys); and one for self decoration badges (seasonal, "I'm an RPer", or a badge that means something in a particular RP).

I can't see any reason why a person's collection of badges should be limited in any way. Some limits on how many they can wear at one time does make sense. Two badge slots seems about right. They should be able to display their whole collection through a link, though.

Pricing/purchasing: The donation-level badges are obviously individual purchases. I think the other two types of badges could be bought in lots. Pick 5, say. How about $10 per 5-pack? This isn't a recurring charge, it is once per pack.

I heartily agree that it makes more sense to sell badges in packages instead of individually - fewer microtransactions that way. $10 for 5 sounds great.

For some reason, I have this feeling that 3 badge slots would be better than two. I've no clue why I feel like that, though.

Now that's just cruel.

I recently started a thread in the mod fora where we basically gush about tropers who we, as mods, find nice and helpful.

If I keep this up I'll soon have passed the Moral Event Horizon.
