Ah nuts, I missed this the first time it was posted, I guess.
Can anyone fill me in on what I've missed since we started this thread? I'm too lazy to read what we've got so far.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes. We're thinking of increasing the attribute cap at character creation to 18, and thinking of increasing the total number of build points to 65 rather than 60. There's also some thing about spell casters/unicorns, and how many slots they should receive.

Journalism is just a gun. It's only got one bullet in it, but if you aim right, that's all you need.Ah.
Hm. Well, Looking at the way I laid out my stats for my bard, an extra 5 points would be a pretty hefty boost for me. Not putting me in overpowered territory, just making it so that I'm no longer QUITE so weak in my weak stats, or further boosting my strong ones. So, could be helpful, but probably wouldn't be overpowered.
As for slots, I think the system I played had any number of spells you please, but you can only use them X times a day. Like, playing a bard I could use any singing/music skill I wanted, but I could only use like, 2 times X(X being my character level) music spells per day without resting. So under that system a level 4 could use any number of spells, but each spell could only be used 2 or 3 times per day without stopping to rest. Of course that system makes more sense for a wizard that has to prepare a ritual for the spell with instant cast magic it's a bit less thematically sound.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Id say keep the attribute skill cap at 16, but raise it to 18 for racial bonus stats. Ex Pegasi can raise DEX to 18, EP can raise CON to 18, etc etc
Pony Cinema - The Best Little Pony Video Site on the Internet Pony ForumDid some tweaking to the basic and advanced Unicorn magic rulings. Basic now gives cantrips with no restrictions and some Level One spells if you have a Cutie Mark, Advanced now gives one Level Two slot and some more Level One slots, with more spell slots once you reach Level Five.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls! So what are you going to do about the basic general skills? Can we just import them from D&D?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayWhat's the difference between Level one and Level two spell slots? Are those just the slots you get at a certain level, or is there some actual difference between them?
Reaction Image RepositorySpell levels determine the power and difficulty of a spell. Magic Missile starts at Level One, but something silly strong like Issac's Lesser Missile Storm is a whopping Level seven or eight at minimum, and Phantasmal Killer is level nine.
I used to play the first Neverwinter Nights and lurk /tg/ so some of this is familiar to me at least.
Flavor wise, Celestia probably keeps most of the dangerous high-level spell info classified and sealed away in the Restricted section in her castle library.

The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!I was actually thinking that spells would be no different than any other skill. No need to complicate things with spell levels and the like.
As for the starting cap, I'm actually leaning toward ditching it entirely. Nobody's going to be able to put more than 18 points into a stat without crippling themselves anyway. I'd also say that 65/70 for starting points sound like a good compromise.
There are ways to get Phant. Killer earlier, but that's usually done through cleric domains. I also think Phant Killer is actually a level 7 spell. ah, it's level 4

It makes sense that ponies would have higher stats than the typical adventurer since Equestria can be a dangerous place, what with wild magic and megafauna. Oh sure, places like Ponyville seem like a Sugar Bowl, but they get disasters and Everfree wildlife and even Tartarus's doggy guard invading, so it's not a saccharine place.

"Don't worry, murder is a sign of affection." - An amalgamation of DunsparceI would hope an MLP_FIM RP would be a little more epic than going down to Sugarcube corner and rolling dice to see if I choke on my cupcake when I try to swallow it in one bite
For this system, an equivalent could be a skill that, say, gives a +4 to investigation rolls to spot important clues, with maybe an additional +1 every 2nd or 3rd level?
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...I think the original suggestion is that a cutie mark grants an easier time picking up skills with certain attributes. Like, my storytelling type mark would give me a major in CHA and a minor in INT and say, WIS. So CHA-based skills would cost me 1 skill point to learn instead of 3, and INT and WIS skills would only cost me 2 instead of 3. That's how I remember it.

Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes. So what if you have a totally abnormal cutie mark like I plan to use? Or should I just scrap that character and start over?
Pony Cinema - The Best Little Pony Video Site on the Internet Pony ForumI interpreted it as being aligned with skills. You can't just have a cutie mark in charisma or something.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play

Now I'm slightly confused about the cantrips as well. Can't we just call them beginner/starter/basic spells?
@wazkatango You can find the links for rules and skills in the first post for this thread. We haven't worked out all the skills yet but Ace is doing a good job so far. As for attributes its intelligence, strength, wisdom, dexterity, constitution, and charisma.
