Goku's Super Saiyan anger was messing with his head in this case. He's acting like a cat torturing its prey before devouring it, in this case humiliating Frieza and letting him suffer.
I mean, it's kind of obvious that when he went Super Saiyan, his mind got a bit clouded by anger. He outright threatened to beat Gohan if he didn't start going.

@ slim: Aside of a handful of characters, not really, I'm afraid. The fact that Anyone Can Die seems to be a roadblock to properly developing most of the heroes doesn't help. And I've heard that the manga, for all of its gruesomeness, actually is somewhat better in this regard.
Tatsumi's Luck stat has to be maxed out.
