It's an interesting situation. Humans obviously and justifiably hate and fear the ghouls because of, you know, all the murders.
On the other hand, Ghouls actually can't survive on anything else, so you get the question of which species should choose to let the other drive them to extinction, and neither one is going to make that choice.
It's potentially possible for something to be worked out so that Ghouls don't murder for food, but that sort of change to a cycle of revenge, plus the massive and easily-corrupted infastructure needed for that is a big problem.

I have a message from another time...![]()
Except the fact that's it's in their blood. If it wasn't for their willpower Kaneki and his friends would be no different from the other ghouls that kill indiscriminately.
Poor Hinami's really been put through the wringer.
To play devil's advocate here, there aren't a lot of fictional vampires (that I know of, at least) that completely suck their targets dry; many are shown to subsist on non-fatal amounts of blood (and, like with what happened between Kaneki and Touka, there are instances of the "victim" willingly offering themselves). That's a bit more "moral" than outright cannibalism, especially when you see ghouls eating living humans whole and reveling in it.

Warrior to the very end! My tumblr, dood! Now here's the other side of the spectrum. Not sure what they wanted us to feel with Mado but you cannot sympathies with the old bastard.
Dude was a fucking psychopath, a monster regardless that he hunted Ghouls. If Ghouls were regular human criminals then Mado would be charged with police brutality for the sheer glee he takes in hunting Ghouls.
Old bastard needed to die, who cares that he has a family.
Nice to know Hinami's family is doing well in Heaven cause see God does love Ghouls.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Holy Mood Whiplash, Batman!
When you wish upon a side of beef, soon will come an end to all your griefThe topics explored in Tokyo Ghoul certainly make for a thought-provoking discussion, if anything.
Even in the shorts does this asshole mess up everything.
Well, you see, funny thing, that...

"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStarLike, I understand what they were going for...but if they wanted us to feel bad, maybe they shouldn't have made him such a sadistic bastard. Sympathy only goes a long way, and while I feel bad for his family, I cannot feel any sort of sadness for this guy's death.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Like, even if someone tried to float the idea of letting Ghouls eat only people who are already dead, there's a lot of room for corruption in that idea (secret murders, Ghoul doctors who "fail" at their job, courts, jails), and I'll bet very few humans would want to allow that out of the kindness of their hearts alone. Like, even the religious angle and the question of proper burials would be a serious question.

I have a message from another time...Also, Edward did go through a phase where he exclusively preyed on murderers and rapists. So even if they absolutely must kill people to survive, they could still restrict themselves to targeting people guilty of heinous crimes.

Well they are minority at the very least or else the Earth shouldn't be very populated.
So they can be contained or something if you kill all the bad eggs.
