One could probably make the case that Goku is a legitimately interesting character study in what happens when a shonen protagonist grows up without actually maturing.
Someone's probably had that thought already, but it just dawned on me.
I'd like to be the first man on the moon.Whoa, what? Chi-Chi just pulled a 180 and is suddenly ok with it?
"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStarI wouldn't say your moms amazing Gohan.
Honestly I would willingly hang out with most of the cast here, even Cell or Majin Buu but if I met Chi-Chi in real life I would not stand her. I would at least tolerate her existence just to hang with Goku who is the only reason why anyone would even associate with Chi-Chi.

Yeah he's very different in Kai. The act both shows are aired back to back makes things even more jarring.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Chi-Chi is a major Control Freak. I don't understand why she's so desperate to have her family be a bunch of normies because A) they're half or quarter alien, and B) the DB world is not
normal
Do not obey in advance. On one hand, Chi-Chi is absolutely right that Goku needs to be more responsible when it comes to his family (which, in his defense, he was showing signs of up until the whole Beerus incident), but on the other hand, Goku is pretty much the earth's best shot at survival whenever the newest villain comes knocking. Can't spend time with your family if the planet is reduced to space dust, after all.
I'm guessing Chi-Chi being all "Oh well lol" when Goku just straight-up leaves is implicitly her giving in to the obvious truth of the latter?

"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStarAh, Prince Lotor. Mastering the White Hair, Black Heart aesthetic before Sephiroth made it look cool.
I'm more willing to blame Toriyama for clearly not liking women very much. Every female character is either a shrew or suffers from Badass Decay brought on by domestication.

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.@ slim: Well, Goku genuinely loves her (as we'll see in a later arc) and is so easygoing most of the time that he seems to be content with letting her take control, but when it comes to martial arts and training, he just flips on a switch and basically gives zero fucks when it comes to Chi-Chi's nagging. Really, the relationship of the full-blooded Saiyans and their human wives makes for good essay material.
