The dragonfly is supposed to represent change and maturation on a personal level, if I'm not mistaken, so possibly. Also, it might have something to do with the Tonbogiri since the teacher was discussing myths.
"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStarI already said this before, but it really feels like we're treading into Castle in the Sky territory, especially now there are soldiers after the heroes for the MacGuffin they're carrying. Considering, Makoto Shinkai says that movie is his favorite anime, this would not surprise me. (It's telling that, as opposed to Laputa, a flying city, Agartha—which is a "legendary" city in real life—resides within the earth's core.)

"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStarEverything about this movie is gorgeous, but I'm especially in love with the designs of these ruins.
Whoa. Direct visual allusions to Princess Mononoke ahoy!

I'd like to be the first man on the moon.@ Maestro: Scenery Porn galore in this film. It's quite the visual treat.
@ Alpha: Night, Alpha!
Well, that scene just torpedoed any plans I had of sleeping tonight.
I'd like to be the first man on the moon.Same here. She's braver than I would be in that situation, for sure!
I'd like to be the first man on the moon.Beary, I'm curious. Did his You Shall Not Pass! moment earn Shin any points from you?
... I was about to say! Shinkai-san, do not play with my emotions like that!
So, like I said—in terms of Studio Ghibli films, this is basically Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away (with a little bit of Nausicaä and Howl's Moving Castle).

"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStarThe Mind Screw is definitely approaching Evangelion levels right now.
Even though Morisaki using Asuna as a vessel for his dead wife was a scumbag move, I have to say I definitely feel sorry for him. He's just a broken man who wants the love of his life back, but life sometimes deals out bad hands.

"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStarI wholly agree. If anything, this only makes me wish that Toonami had a better budget so we could get more films every once in a while.

Well, yeah, he didn't intend for things to end up that way (hence the "I told you not to come here" line), but at the same time, you didn't see Morisaki try to stop/reverse the process once it started. So, it was still a something of a scumbag move, even if I can sympathize with his motives.

"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStar@ X 2 X] It seemed pretty clear that he didn't want to use her that way, but his need to have his wife back was just a bit stronger than his conscience in that moment.
Well! That was a darn good movie, I'd say. Not perfect, but moving and satisfying and excruciatingly pretty. Good night, y'all!

I'd like to be the first man on the moon.I have to say, I'm really loving this dub of Jo Jo. I love how much JYB and Patrick Seitz are Chewing the Scenery.

Now that I think about it, The Bible does mention a story of certain rebels being swallowed by the Earth and brought alive into Sheol. An inspiration for this story, perhaps?

@ Maestro: Definitely not a bad thing, but you're right in that it's easily mistakable for a Studio Ghibli production. As the saying goes, imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery...
Why do I get the feeling Asuna's going to regret not having dinner with her mother?
... The fact that we're now hearing the story of Izanagi and Izanami does not help.
Also, bittersweet flashbacks with adorable toddler!Asuna and grieving widow!Mom.
