Pretty much, although I do plan on watching Kai once it covers the Boo Arc.

Maybe they can cast somebody new as Kid Trunks.

Really getting tired of Laura Bailey... She's not bad but she's in too much. Taking over my Hiyori in Bleach has made me very upset with her. I don't want Hiyori to sound like Trunks goddammit.

Oh that reminds me though, Fat Buu actually talks normal in the manga doesn't he? So he won't have the cartoon infant voice and speech pattern in the Kai dub. Is that a relief for you?

Is there any approximate date when Buu Arc Kai will be released?

Kai only really cuts out the filler and adjusts the script to match. It won't be redoing it to the extent of changing things like that, I don't think.

But it doesn't bother me, I'm fine with Boo's dub voice.

[up] No idea.

Well he talks normal in the Japanese version is what I meant. If they're trying for a more faithful script and stuff they won't have things like "ME EAT YOU UP, ME EAT YOU UP".

I don't even know who the dub voice of Fat Buu was. They might have to replace him.

Justin Cook is still around to be Super Buu though and he was great.

What the hell. Subs came automatically with my Kai download and I didn't know Japanese Popo talked like this:

"Popo think so too. Old Daimao not make Son Goku's son stronger."

Oh, in that case the dub might be more accurate. I didn't know what the Japanese anime did.

You own the Viz DB/DBZ manga, right?

Do you have the individual volumes or the VIZBIG editions? I was wondering if it was better to just get the latter or if there was something special or unique in just the volume sets that justifies getting all of them?

I only have the first 16 volumes, got the box set for that. I've been trying to get a hold of the Z manga in an affordable release but haven't been successful because the box sets are out of print and the VizBigs are never available at the same time. There's always 2-3 out of stock and I haven't wanted to buy them separately out of fear that the out of stock ones won't be reprinted.

The volumes are inferior to the VizBig in every single way, in terms of paper quality, price and colour pages. Unless you particularly like the volume covers or how colour pages look when printed black-and-white (which is pretty cool) then I'd go with the VizBigs.

Do you not get them online? I'm pretty sure places like Amazon wouldn't ever be sold out.

Oh god, DBZ boxset for $200... I guess that's not so bad cosnidering its half the series.

And thanks for the recs. I'll get the Viz Big then.

Don't go that DBZ boxset, it's a trap!

It's missing the actual box and isn't being sold by Amazon.

Hey, only 4 and 5 are missing on Amazon.com for the VizBigs right now.

Heh. I've dealt with the Amazon Marketplace sellers before and never got screwed over. I guess I could have just been lucky though.

But don't worry, I won't be getting any DBZ volumes for quite a while. You know I'm a Part 1 fan so of course I have to start there. Getting and reading all of those will take plenty of time. (I'm a slow reader and often get distracted)

Kikuchi composed the music for the original anime. For the Funimation dub, they had Faulconer make their own music. When Kai was made, they had Yamamoto, who got fired for plagiarism some time around the English dub reaching the Cell Games. After that, they used Kikuchi again.

...I really don't care much for Kikuchi's music, it's sorta bland and unfitting (One scene with Cell has slide whistles like they're at a carnival). Faulconer's and Yamamoto's scores are both really good, though.

I do know about Faulconer. I'm a huge fan of the American DBZ score.

I can see why some "original" fans hate the American anime after watching Kai. Music is pretty much always playing in Funi DBZ while in Kai (and I guess the original Japanese DBZ) music is much more sparse.

The music in Kai isn't too bad... Nothing groundbreaking but decent. I vastly prefer Faulconer.

Of course the best DB-related OST is...DB's OST.

Goddam I love that song so much.

There is a simplistic beauty to it isn't there?

*Waits for Saiga*

I like a lot of elements of pre-Saiyan saga Dragonball, although I also like a lot of elements past the Saiyan Saga. One of the main pros for older Dragonball for me is that it felt less sparse; eventually, it started to feel like the world outside the main combatants didn't really matter at all.

[up][up] Exactly right. I mean, do you remember the scenes where Goku just flew around on the Nimbus, laughing and having fun? It was both adorable and beautiful - a real treat to watch, even if it contributed nothing to the episode apart from the fact Goku is a lovable little scamp.

But then when it had to be intense...it was fucking intense.

I have now watched 20 episodes of DB Kai.

My thoughts:

1. The lack of filler is indeed pleasant enough. It makes me chuckle when Roshi reports to Goku that the flight to Namek was smooth and uneventful. "What, you mean they didn't stumble upon a Fake Namek at some point?" "Why of course not! That just be silly!"

2. With regards to the English dub, I do enjoy the more mature and accurate script. However I think a lot of the the improvements in terms of acting ability are overstated. Yes Sabat's Vegeta is much smoother, and he now uses his Zoro voice for Piccolo so he sounds more normal and not perpetually growly, but I think Sean and Sunny are about the same as they were at the end of Z. New voices I can comment on at the moment:

Clinkenbeard's Gohan channels Luffy a bit too much for my taste but overall she's very nice in the role. When Gohan tells Chi Chi to shut up and he has to go to Namek for the sake of all those who died - that was very well done.

Monica Rial's Bulma is quite overrated in my opinion. I never hated Tiffany Vollmer and I certainly don't think Rial is some A-grade goddess of voice-acting. She's adequate. I'll be honest though - at the moment I prefer Vollmer. That could easily be due to the fact she voiced Bulma in Dragon Ball ie. when Bulma actually mattered.

I haven't heard enough of Ayres' Freeza but it sounds very promising. I liked a few things in the Z Dub but Linda Young's Freeza is not one of them. She's a great actress but not for a galactic tyrant.

3. There was this really weird insert song in Episode 17 when they are gathering all the bodies of the dead Z Warriors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I258riBfGKc

I don't think that fit at all.

4. My final thought as of right now is that watching Kai is just giving me a major nostalgia boner for Z. Like, do you guys remember the Ginyu/Bulma filler? I'm remembering when I watched DBZ on Cartoon Network all those years ago and when Ginyu took over Bulma's body, the voice-actor for Ginyu just adopted the most ridiculous fake girl voice in the history of anything. It was amazing.

Overall I am enjoying Kai well enough. I haven't come upon any scenes that I identify with a certain voice or Faulconer piece though. I expect to be a bit put off by Vegeta's Final Flash in this version, as well as anything to do with Eighteen.

That's from Chapter 230 (36 in Viz's Z release) "Too Much Power?" and it's page 25 of the Tankobon.
