About Gohan and being a scholar or martial artist, I fail to see why it couldn't be a little bit of both. I don't see why he couldn't enjoy training with his father and Piccolo without wanting to hurt people or dedicate his life to it like they have. I also fail to understand why he couldn't legitimately want to be a scholar but not want to spend all his free time studying like Chichi would force him to. Plus, during most of the series, he's five and frankly has much more important things to worry about, so it's no wonder he wouldn't want to study. It doesn't have to be one or the other.
It's entirely possible that during the seven years of peace, he actually came to like studying too.
Maybe the experience with Cell (and having everyone count on him and botch it) left him not as enamoured to fighting as he'd been previously.
One Strip! One Strip!Or maybe he always liked studying and was able to consider 'Saving The World' as a bigger priority, but once 'Saving The World' was no longer a thing he had to do, he became a lot more inclined to pursue what he wanted to do, which is study lots.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariYeah.
I mean, perhaps it's not that he didn't like studying, but that even at a young age, he understood that this whole save the world thing was actually kinda important.
I suppose it ties into the earlier argument that Chi-Chi never fully understood the world Goku lived in.
One Strip! One Strip!I think I have a good real-life analogy for what Gohan's training could have been like.
When I was little, I used to do ballet. I really enjoyed it. But family issues meant I wasn't able to go to practice anymore. It was only once I didn't have to go to the practices every week when I realised I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought. So I stopped going.
The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby! The same is true regardless of what age you are. However, this is Dragon Ball. Real world physics and biology need not apply.

Yeah but the difference is that your ballet isn't needed to have a better chance of protecting your family/planet from regular threats.
The first time Gohan slacked off was completely understandable. Every time some new threat comes up, it makes less and less sense.
Also aliens. Aliens from a warrior race.

I mentioned it a while ago, Gohan has like severe short term memory issues.
"Well, that problem's dealt with! I guess I can just never train again, because nothing bad will ever happen ever again."

My various fanfics. But the whole point was Goku thought that if he stayed dead, then there would be no more threats to the Earth. And in a way, he was right. I mean, Babidi just HAPPENS to show up the day he comes back to life?
I wonder if it really IS Goku who's attracting danger.

One thing I really want to see is SSJ 2 Gohan that actually looks his age. I get artstyle and all that, but he does NOT look 10.

At least they got past the point where Perfect Cell had Imperfect Cell's shouts.
