I'd say Megumi was just as useful in Ruroni Kenshin as the guys. I mean, where would they be without their fantastic doctor?
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!"Emotional baggage"
The only role she could've possibly had in the Buu arc that she didn't in canon is a much closer lovey-dovey emotional relationship with Gohan, that ultimately leads to her dying when Buu blows up the planet and then Gohan flips out... but he already had that with the death of his mother, his friends and his little brother.
Maybe if she was a science geek and could invent cool gad- oh wait, Bulma covers that.
Well surely she can figh- oh wait, no she can't.
She's got no potential as a character at that point in the story given how weak she was. It's a fighting show, that had all the support roles filled by the time she got introduced.
Never seen Hunter x Hunter, so that one is exempt,
but the only shows you mentioned with competent females there are Bleach and KLK (though this one comes with the baggage of incompetent males).

"If you weren't so crazy I'd think you were insane."
Looking at it that way, there was kinda no point to Videl at all.
I mean, she did give us some insight into Satan, and I think she's a cool character in her own right, but she's a normal human who's probably even weaker then Yamcha Chiaotzu ....... I don't even know.
I like her, and I still think she's a better fighter than Spopovitch (though most of those knockdowns were probably just him fucking around).
One Strip! One Strip!I like the fact that she introduced kind of a new perspective into the world of Dragon Ball and all the characters.
Like, for every one of the characters, flying faster than the speed of sound and shooting lasers out of their hands is just something they've known about ever since they could talk, but for her, it was all new and it was kind of exciting to see someone learn about that for the first time.
Or maybe it's just me, I don't know.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseShe had the common sense to carry a Cell Phone.
Even Chi-Chi didn't do that.
Hell, even fricking Bulma doesn't carry a Cell Phone. You'd think she would think of something like that.
One Strip! One Strip!Videl was a character that worked perfectly well in the high school plot that the Buu arc started with. Had the story remained about Gohan's misadventures in High School while he's Saiyaman on the side with Videl trying to uncover his identity and also a romantic subplot, she wouldn't have been made superfluous.
However, when Toriyama shifted gears back into a DBZ plot, she became horribly irrelevant horribly fast.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariGohan's adventures in High School work well, just not in the context of Dragonball's Serial Escalation
Yea, but that's not why people loved Dragon Ball Z, so it was quickly shifted back into fighting.
Looking back, yea Videl had a fairly substantial role up until the World Tournament, where she was quickly stuffed into the fridge and then just thrown in with the rest of cannon fodder.
You know, I love Dragon Ball Z and I always will, but I've really gotten tired of throwing characters to the side when they're no longer relevant. Its just an extreme pet peeve I have in any series.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.I agree with everything you said, Bacon Mania.
At first, I didn't care too much for Videl, but then I started writing a fanfic from her perspective, and it made me gain a real appreciation for her character. Through her, we get to see the characters from an outsider's perspective. And she wants to be involved, even if she has to find out her father's a liar and her friend is part-alien and that people are in danger.
Videl's character growth in the Buu Saga is pretty much a story all on its own, if you think about it.

The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby!Well, I'm also a new fan, so...
Maybe everyone else has known it for so long it's not interesting anymore.
The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby! For all I know, everyone's sick of my random observations like "Wow, the fight with Freeza actually IS long! I thought that was just an exaggeration!"
At least when the Super discussion starts, we can all be equally clueless.
The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby! The general consensus is no, because we're just going to talk about it here, even if we have a dedicated Super thread.

Since when is Kill La Kill an old school shonen? And a majority of the characters are women, including the main character, her best friend and her primary Foil :V
