Eh mileage may vary on that.
I didn’t really find any of the stuff that happened in him in the last episodes very well-written.
Broly was simple as Hell sure but at least ya got all that he was, Jiren was an inconsistent mess.

Unless you count deliberately letting his teammates get eliminated because he thought they'd be in the way.
To be fair, all of us have complained about Japanese Goku's voice.
Now imagine having to hear that for hours non stop like Broly did when he was just trying to get some sleep. You'd wanna beat the shit out of the other guy too.
The whole being left to die on an exploding planet probably didn't help his negative Goku stance either.

That's a dub induced plot hole then.
That's not enough of a justification for Vic Mignogna's destroyed throat

Uni catSaying Jiren is better than Old!Broly really isn't saying much, Damned by Faint Praise basically. They're both terribly written characters but Broly at least has an interesting background that just wasn't utilized at all.
Jiren doesn't really have much to him beyond the cliche "Loner that only relies on his strength" archetype seen in every other Shonen.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.I like the idea of Jiren's backstory, but the way it and his subsequent personality were executed was awful. A lot of the potential for foiling him with Goku or even just plain building him up as a character plain didn't happen, and the backstory dump only combined with the generic "I'm obsessed with being strong!" bit to make him really rather bland.
Broly is easily one of the most well-developed DBZ movie villains.
Yeah yeah, Damned by Faint Praise, but still.
De Romanīs, lingua Latina gloriosa non fuī.Jiren's backstory isn't really bad so much as it is generic, and even then it has the fun twist of "and then the same villain who murdered his family also decimated the team he made to avenge his family".
Also, Jiren's whole breakdown and character arc fighting UI Goku was great, that was fantastic. The parallels between Jiren fighting to preserve his worldview of being a loner while Goku is fighting for the lives of his friends and is summoning up more stamina and determination out of their support was great, as well as Jiren's little mental breakdown when he was confronted with the truth and the wall between them finally shattering in the final episode.
If Jiren was given more characterization early on and his character was ironed out better, he could've easily been one of the best Dragon Ball antagonists, since the story they told with him was definitely a strong story from a thematic point of view. It just needed a bit more work put into it.

That's a twist? That sounds fairly generic to me as well. Even then, being generic isn't necessarily bad, but it was painfully clear they weren't even trying with Jiren. It's made worse that nothing in the backstory actually explains how Jiren was able to get so strong, just why he was so focused on strength.

Why do people dislike the Crying thing?
What is wrong with it, it's the best thing about him.
