This is true.

After all, who else is going to lose to show how powerful everyone else, or how serious the situation is?

Or get taken out instantly so he's not in the way...or something like that?

Or just be used as a punching bag?

I've long since accepted that Yamcha is just a Worf, the butt of some jokes and narrative tool rather than a character, and that Toriyama will never see him as anything but that.

The "Nice Guy fantasy" is calling out the people who pretend to be nice but really only want sex, and all of their nice actions are done with the motivation of getting sex. They don't respect the woman in question's autonomy and right to choose and they think they are entitled to sex just because they were nice to her, even when said woman has shown no romantic interest in the Nice Guy whatsoever.

This does not match Krillin. Krillin is a genuinely nice person. Krillin and 18's relationship started with 18 blatantly and openly flirting with him. It's not entirely one-sided, and it makes sense that she'd be charmed by his kindness and bravery throughout the arc, especially since she's the one who initiated the flirting in the first place.

Ironically, Lightysnake, you're the one who's ignoring 18's autonomy and right to choose in this situation. The whole relationship started because 18 decided for herself that Krillin was cute and she decided to flirt with him.

Again. The author more or less admitted she was a reward to Krillin for being such a good guy. After this, she becomes the definition of chickified to the point where she's left out of the fight with Frieza so she can protect the kid all while gushing how awesome Krillin is.

18's autonomy is badly hindered by writer fiat as opposed to much actual development we see for the characters beyond "she flirted with Krillen and kissed his cheek after promising to hunt and murder his best friend for sport." All because Krillin is so nice that he deserves a hot wife as a reward for it.

The only couple in DB that hasn't raised serious eyebrows at times pretty much remains Videl and Gohan since Chichi and Goku is basically a running joke at this point.

I still think Toriyama should have ended it after the Bulma Saga.

No wonder he cheated on her.

Bulma actively dumped Yamcha and went out to gather the Dragon Balls to try and wish for a new boyfriend because he was too nice.

Bulma is objectively a horrible person and Bulma/Vegeta makes so much sense because of how perfect they are for each other.

Okay, saying that 18 is a "reward" is from an out-of-universe perspective, one of the writer. Neither 18 nor Krillin are real people, they are fictional characters. Krillin's story has focused on and off about him being a lonely loser. It makes sense to give him some resolution on that. There is nothing wrong with the writer of this story writing 18 as a character meant to be Krillin's romantic interest (which was clearly the intent from at least the point where she kissed him).

From an out-of-universe perspective, he wrote a character with the purpose of being a romantic interest for another character. That's how writing and story design works. Do you really think romances in fiction just kind of happen naturally? Sometimes, characters are created to give other characters romantic interests, like I'm sure Videl was, and I'm sure was the reason for bringing back Chi-Chi.

From an in-universe perspective, 18 clearly had a romantic interest in Krillin first, and it was her actions that kick-started the whole plot-line. Questioning her autonomy in their relationship feels asinine.

18 suffered a Chickification? I mean, so did Krillin. She did get a few badass moments in the Buu saga but other than that i quite agree she was mostly relegated to Krillin's hot strong wife.

That did change a bit in Super. In the early arcs she was kinda left out. At least TOP did feature her as a powerful fighter again, although i have no clue how she got that strong.

Honestly, if you factor in Jaco, and if you turn your head and squint a little, the entirety of Dragon Ball starts looking like Bulma's long-running gambit to become Empress of the Universe.

With the Android blueprints and the wining and dining Whis and the illegal time machines.

Boning the planet destroying space pirate and earning his loyalty.

[up][up] I like my romances to feel natural. I don't think Krillin and 18 ever did, and I dislike what it's done to 18 as a character

[up][up][up] None of these romances feel natural.

Goku only married Chi-Chi because everyone guilted him into fulfilling a promise he made when he was a child.

Even then calling it “romances” is a bit false for what it is.

Though it’s not like 18 got any major changes at the very least unlike Videl.

He patted her crotch and sullied her innocence, and then her dad offered her hand as a reward for saving his castle.

And Kami I hate what happened to Videl's personality.

She basically used to be Vegeta as a teenage earthling girl.

If anyone in the cast would have become a cop it would be her, not Krillin.

Especially since I remember her saying she wanted to be a police detective.
