I don't think you can compare the two fights, since the battle against Krillin was cut short as soon as Krillin got a "ring out". In a straight-up fight Gohan would have recovered pretty quickly and beaten him way more easily than he beat Lavenda.
No beer?! But if there's no beer, then there's no beef or beans!TOP = Toppu...
Not so fast.
It's like ToP but not.

Nah I double checked. After getting blinded by Lavender it takes a couple minutes of being smacked around before he adjusts. After getting blinded by Krillin he's knocked out of bounds within about five seconds.
Yeah, I went back and rewatched both. But Gohan only got knocked around by Lavender because he hadn't tried using his senses to pick him up (and honestly, even that's inconsistent with Yamcha vs Invisible Man and Goku vs Yakon) the moment he tries, he inmediately blocks Lavender.
So Gohan being caught off guard doesnt work the second time, he should immediately know what to do and yet he's dumbfounded.
Yeah. I mean, even if you take the entire ''no experience with Tournaments into account, it's way too late to claim that even an out of shape Gohan couldn't beat Krillin with his eyes closed, no matter how good a technique the latter came up with.
Weak, but Skilled is not a thing in Dragonball, and neither Toei or Toriyama should claim otherwise. Especially the former, since I don't think Toriyama had the patience for Weak, but Skilled.
One Strip! One Strip!True. Even late into the series, when the Solar Flare is used, it tends to completely stop whoever it's used on in its tracks, even into the point in the series where they should be able to sense Ki and continue to track opponents that way.
I can only assume that being hit with it when you are unprepared means your mind instead goes to Oh god! oh god! I can't see! Oh shit! mode, instead of I just gonna sense where that asshole is and kick his ass mode.
Though notably, it's most notable uses late in the series when used on the characters who can sense Ki, are Cell in his imperfect and Semi Perfect forms (that former time to run away, and the latter time to stun Trunks long enough for him to get 18). Trunks is kinda a fighting noob, so I can buy him not having the precision skill to track Cell's movements even if he could still sense his ki.
One Strip! One Strip!Oh right. It is supposed to dull ki as well (though I don't get how).
The Solar Flare's one flaw is that late in the series, it's only useful against characters who can't do that (barring Cell's use of it, and he knew how to suppress his energy).
I mean, if Gohan can't sense Krillin coming, can't see him, and only had a few seconds to realize the latter was coming, I can see how Krillin could have ringed him out, in contrast to Lavenza who took his time (due to ring outs not factoring into the exhibition matches).
One Strip! One Strip! My assumption is that the Solar Flare x100 blocks ki sensing by releasing such a huge amount of ki light into the air that it obscures and overpowers the ki signal being let out by people. Kind of like how the normal Solar Flare blocks your eyes with a shitton of light, the Solar Flare x100 blocks ki sensing with a shitton of ki getting released into the air from all directions.
Well I could argue that Gohan is still kinda rusty, and also that he assumed he'd beat Krillin easily (because he should), and thus was caught off guard...
...but I'm just gonna say you're right, because everything about Super is dumb anyway. Even the stuff I do like.
One Strip! One Strip!

It would've been cool...since it'd bee like he's making everyone into Freeza.
