DBZ isn't comedy enough.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. And then almost immediately back to an action series...
On TFS I will say I've liked their Cell a lot and they've managed to make him memorable when he was overall the most lacklustre of the DBZ main villain lot. He's been what's keeping their cast strong when certain other elements have been lacking lately.
I do think that in general the main character they write best is Vegeta, (him turning up on Earth is when I think DBZA started to get really good) and they struggle a bit when they can't rely on him - and he has gotten a lot less screentime ever since Cell punched his lights out.

"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"Taking itself seriously too often seems like a "what not to do" rule...

Impressions were and remain below average...

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Okay, don't worry. No swaying here.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I don't think the Cell arc ever took itself too seriously. It does have less room for humour than most other arcs (though I'd say the Saiyan arc has it beat) but that's not the same thing.
Calling Cell the most lackluster of the Z villains is hardly a knock when there's only four of them. And I'd disagree, Imperfect Cell is awesome and Perfect Cell, while not personally my cup of tea, is very distinctive in his attitude and demeanour.
TFS Cell is nothing more than the same thing with really uncomfortable sexual humour stapled on.

Cell Saga's seriousness didn't do to well for my mother introducing it to me.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. The problem with the Cell Arc compared to the Saiyan arc is that it's a whole lot longer. Though Dragon Ball's single worst "too serious" moment is definitely in the Buu arc when Videl gets the shit kicked out of her for absolutely no reason and really spitefully.
Imperfect Cell is alright but he gives all his mystery away too early. Perfect Cell is basically just a cruddy Freeza knockoff. There's almost nothing memorable about him. He's just an arrogant, super powerful warrior who gets angry when there's someone more powerful than him.
I mean, Buu's no gem either, but he isn't any worse even in his Super Buu and Kid Buu stages than Perfect Cell is, and in my estimation Fat Buu > Imperfect Cell.

"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"Perfect Cell and Super Buu are basically the same.
I'd probably have more to say about Cell's powers being boring since he only recycles other people's attacks but since 90% of the attacks in Dragonball are identical anyway that isn't really a factor honestly.
"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"Well Cell's got a charisma thanks to his VA that helps make him more memorable.
Same with Frieza really.
Plus he does have the excuse of being an artificial life-form designed solely for death & destruction so it makes sense he has a rather simple way of going through life.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I'll give him that, and some of his lines are pretty decent ("Chanting a little prayer before you die?")
But I can't forgive him for introducing the curse of the main villain healing factor.

"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"Super Buu doesnt remind me of Cell until after he absorbs Piccolo and Gotenks and Gohan.
"Base" Super Buu has a sort of intelligent thuggery to him that I actually sorta like because it's different from other villains.
He's unsophisticated compared to Frieza, and he seems pretty book-dumb, but, even though he doesnt know what an hour is at first, he's able to calculate it from the rate of sand falling in the hourglass Piccolo made.
And he outwits Gotenks a bunch. Not hard admittedly.

Which is also why comments about them "being better than the original" rub me the wrong way - if I was reading or watching something that was trying to be taken mostly seriously with this dialogue, I'd roll my eyes so hard they'd pop out of my skull.
Why would it rub you the wrong way? I assume the people that consider DBZA better than the original are including the more comedic tone as one of the things that makes it better.
