Not so much.
I just don't want to see the biggest dude getting beaten just because of a stereotype. If it makes sense for him to lose, then fine.
One Strip! One Strip!I'd say both.
We see Goku take out a huge dude during the pre-lims of the 21st Budokai (and I think Krillin does the same) while commenting that they need to pull their punches to avoid killing anyone.
However, we also see Giran giving him a tough fight until he re-grows his tail.
Then there's Seargeant Metallic, who tanks damn near everything Goku throws at him and only loses due to a lose of power.
We also have Nappa dominating the Z Warriors, but being totally subservient to Vegeta, and then getting utterly rekt by Goku, but he was built up well so that Goku beating worked.
And of course, there was the same with Recoome.
Then we have Magetta. Vegeta even comments that strength is nothing without speed, so he just says fuck you, I spit lava! and evens the playing field...with a bit of help from Champa too, but still.
So yeah, sometimes it's ok for the big guy to lose, but I think they can also bring something to the table beyond being big dudes who lose because their big dudes and Lol! not slim bishies!
One Strip! One Strip!Dragon Ball usually has balance. Size and muscle aren't directly proportionate to strength, but at the same time they're not inversely proportionate as what can happen when people try too hard to be subversive or really really make their point clear.
DB makes its point pretty clear without being super on the nose about it, and big, traditionally tough looking guys can still be really strong. It manages to avoid having a rule that makes things predictable and stale.
I think that's the most important thing. If the biggest ways were always the weakest in a given work, then it'd be just as stale as being able to tell who the strongest was based on who had the biggest, throbbing muscle.
Very well put. In the case of even fights, it's more that they appear even because 90% of the fighting that takes place is random events that don't matter to the outcome.
As for DB's subversiveness, I think that DB was subversive, but in a way that was still careful to develop the story organically. It wasn't a matter of setting up a bait and switch, but developing things in a way contrary to expectations that had a better pay off than just playing something straight. I think that was one of his strengths, and can be seen in how he handled Trunks, or managed to deal with the Android arc changes that were semi-forced upon him (not perfectly, but damn admirably given the circumstances) or how he takes REALLY lame premises given to him by Toei and makes something good of them (Beerus, Goku Black).
But I think the subversiveness has been exaggerated, by both the fandom and creators - including Toriyama himself. That's kind of an issue with Super, there are a lot of 'subversive' ideas that aren't the least bit surprising, or subversive ideas that manage to be surprising without feeling organic in the story. The balance is very rarely there.
...Welcome back Pope. And well said.
One Strip! One Strip! He's the most popular Movie villain with only like Cooler, Turles, Bojack, Android 13 and Super Janeba as competition... and even then its wide Gap between first and second.
For fuck sake man he's usually one of the only Movie villains to make into the games

Praise be to the absolute QueenSome parts of the internet have been trying to downplay his popularity of late but if you look at the reactions to his FighterZ trailers, he is still very much liked by many people.
This song needs more love.I mean, I myself said that Broly brings a certain entertaining kind of crazy to Fighter Z. You can just tell he enjoys beating the shit out of people, not just Goku.
One Strip! One Strip! Is Turles even that popular?
He looks like he's having so much fun in Fighter Z.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I have become enamored with those dragon ball dissected videos
Curse whoever posted it
Forever liveblogging the Avengers
Well, I posted the last one, but the first one posted was the one on Power Levels.
What are your thoughts on them? I'd like to hear it myself.
One Strip! One Strip! They bring up some salient arguments and I'm mad that there aren't more videos for the Cell saga yet
Now I have to go back and watch them from the beginning and hope the next videos come out like some kind of person who is invested in a series
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI was rereading the Frieza fight and I had completely forgotten that Frieza tried the ol' "spam a bunch of ki blasts" technique on Super Saiyan Goku. And it worked about just as well as the times Vegeta used it.
I also got a good chuckle out of "Hmm, this planet probably only has about 2 or 3 minutes left" *a couple dozen pages later* "This planet will explode in only 2 minutes!"

Well, Goku didn't directly comment on it the way Abridged Goku did...at least I don't think he did.
But I guess you could say Dragonball both plays it straight and subverts it, since your size is irrelevant if you have a high enough power level.
You could be the fattest piece of crap on the planet with legs as thick as tree trunks and stubbier than...a really stubby thing...and it won't matter if you got more ki than the totally lean and ripped dude.
One Strip! One Strip!
