Who would have thought that, in order to make a character interesting, you just have to give them a personality?
Seriously, in those final two episodes, where Jiren finally starts emoting, he was actually kind of a cool antagonist. Like, maybe still not quite proper for an arc villain, but serviceable. Shame it took so long for him to get there.

I agree as I too loved those emotive expressions he did in the final episode.
That arrogant smirk before the final battle & that grimacing smile through his teeth after crashing into Goku & Frieza. Reminds me that I still love his character design.
Its just too little, too late.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Buff Grey Alien...
Pretty basic...
Not bad though...

It's the perfect trio.

Belmod: Let me tell you about Jiren's tragic backstory.
*afterwards*
17: So that's your wish. You're a pretty human guy after all.
I figure it was just some poor wording that made it confusing and it'll be less ambiguous in the dub.

It's kind of funny. If that is Jiren's wish in the manga, fighting to bring his family back is the one thing he's willing to kill for, and Zen-Oh was going to erase everything if he didn't wish to bring back the erased universes. Of all the characters who would have made that wish, Jiren might not be among them, since he already had a very clear vision of what he wanted his wish to be.
U7 should just let him use their Dragon Balls, the man's clearly traumatized by his loss,
Maybe it just means he doesn't care for anyone else...other than his family.

But anyway, count me in the "It doesn't make his previous showings retroactively less bland, but Jiren was actually a pretty good character and antagonist in the final two episodes" camp. I did like his grimace of pain turning into big dumb grin after getting gut-checked by Goku and Frisbee.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!What...he's releasing his inner Kid Boo there, jeesh.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I also really enjoyed seeing Jiren go through a whole character arc in one and a half episodes. It would've been good to stretch it out longer over more of the climax, but him going from "trust is bullshit and I'm stronger than you, so that proves my point" to "trust is bullshit and I'll prove it" to "maybe this trust thing isn't so bad after all since you beat me" to "alright Toppo, I'll take your trust and see if it's all it's cracked up to be" is a solid and well-done character arc.
When you put it like that, it makes the whole thing sound way worse & hard to take seriously.
Like fucking breakneck speed in the last episode, I'm surprised Jiren did snap his neck from all that development piled all at once.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Did you not see how meaty his neck is...?
No pace in the world is fast enough to break that thickness.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. That really doesn't sound particularly solid or well-built, especially when you realize that for the character, it all happened in the span of a couple of minutes, at most.
Honestly thinking of it in that context just makes it much worse. Deeply held beliefs that have been fostered and grown for years don't even begin to change that quickly.

Eh, it was a bit quick, but 30 minutes isn't an unreasonable amount of screentime to have a character arc, especially since Jiren's idea was that he was the strongest specifically because he didn't trust anyone, so when evidence to the contrary punched him in the face, his worldview started crumbling fast.
He didn't have any time to steel his ideals...or think about the fact that his worldview was shattered.

I actually kind of liked Jiren towards the end with his facial expressions and his whole "you can't be this strong or else I've done all this for nothing" schtick.
If they had just had him slowly come to this realization starting from the beginning and give him that level emotion he would have been perfectly fine.
This song needs more love.
