So is Turtle Hermit, that doesn't make him a jerk.

He's just a crotchety old man...

As bad as that is, I wouldn't equate that with being a negligent asshole like in the shadow dragon case.

Let's go through all of the gods. If you want to count Korrin then he breaks the rule since he's neither stupid, incompetent or an asshole.

Kami? - purged his evil half then did absolutely bugger all to stop him while he terrorised the humans, until he joined the fight in the 23rd BT and was immediately defeated.

King Kai? - he's neither incompetent nor an asshole but he is pretty foolish, making people tell him jokes before training them even when time is of the essense.

Supreme Kais? - they accomplish practically nothing throughout the series.

Supreme Kai lost his master, of course he's incompetent.

He's like Trunks.

Yeah, they mentioned that there was a time-traveller in U12, and there is one extra time ring that doesn't correspond to any of the timeline splits Future Trunks made.

Whoever it was apparently used some method known to the gods already, though, since Whis was astonished that a mortal could build an entirely mechanical time machine, hinting that that had never happened before.

So Kaio and Kaioshin already don't count based off that.

God's absence in Piccolo's rampages is suspect, but it was explained by two points a) a God may not kill themself, b) God did not know of another way. Once he found a way, he tried to resolve things himself. It's not incompetence that Piccolo was able to devise a counter to it, when Daimao failed to do so.

sorry to drudge up an old conversation, but i think that this thread overlooked a pretty important/telling line from the interview

Nakamura: I’m sure everyone realizes this too, but in a situation like this, the story’s not going to end with Goku simply firing a Kamehameha and finishing Jiren off, like with previous villains (laughs).

If that is how he sees the previous entries in the series, then I think we're (worryingly) working with a director that hasn't actually seen Dragon Ball, the show they're supposedly writing for. Because that never happens in any major fights in the series.

Yeah, that stuck out to me. I get a strong feeling they think their ending is way more subversive than what it will actually be

That better be a joke cause ....... yeah

King Piccolo: Dragon Fist, Vegeta: Spirit-Bomb Frieza: Generic one-handed ki blast, Cell: BEAM STRUGGLE Kamehameha, Buu: Spirit Bomb, Zamsu: Spirit Sword.

Only Kefla was outright defeated with a Kamehameha & that's literally in this arc.

[up] Okay so only twice out of over 6 times.

It's not even about the technique used, but the implication behind it. The endings really haven't been as straightforward as he is implying - the times when Goku DOES win, it's a real struggle to get there.

I think the point was that Goku isn't just kicking Jiren's ass like a typical villain. I don't think he was being fully literal.

Really think he was just hinting at Freeza being the winner. Or maybe Jiren does learn friendship and gives up. Or he meant that Jiren is just gonna bring everyone back so everyone wins. I think the main take away is that Jiren isn't a villain.

[down] I was just explaining why I think people are reading too much into this. No need to sound dismissive.

When was the last time Goku defeated a villain unassisted? Was it Frieza on Namek?
