There's absolutely no reason to take Buu's word on it either. And even if it were true Gohan is working under the impression he's going to save them, so it doesn't matter.
Not to say I think it's a terrible thing to say, it's just not super clever or scathing either.

Light spoilers for 129.
Apparently, Jiren has still been holding back.

There's 100% no way of knowing if he knows what they're thinking either, you're literally stating a fact based on an assumption and how the original line and manga don't make any reference to Buu knowing the thoughts of who he absorbs.
So yea, Buu is full of shit and the dub changed that line for no real reason.
Because why the fuck not right. They're clearly going to knock each other out.

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.In fairness, Gohan has a good track record beating absorbed people out of smug jerks
One time. A personal best
Forever liveblogging the AvengersEven if Gohan knows he's lying it still works as psychological warfare because it took a moment where Gohan was trying to be cocky and cool and went nah you fucked up, bro
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI think the insult works.
On an intellectual level, Gohan probably knows Buu is bullshitting. That he's just saying that to rile Gohan up and get under his skin (it also shows another subtle change in Buu, as he didn't not previously bother with any form of psychogical warfare). At the same time though, his own guilt at not only being too late to prevent the deaths of his mother, his friends, and his girlfriend, along with watching his mentor and younger brother (well half of him) be absorbed right in front of him is bound to have shaken him a bit, so the taunt is going to bite one way or another.
That's how I see it. I don't really get why some people are arguing against it so hard. I think it's a total valid view to take on the matter. Sometimes I think we spend so much time arguing about things on this thread that we do it about anything.
One Strip! One Strip!I rewatched the scene and Buu continues with "Piccolo thought you were better than this" and "Trunks thinks you're a coward" while Gohan doesn't say anything in response, so it looks it's getting under his skin.
Not really, it's the whole premise of the line.

Not it's not because nothing implies that's the case. All it is is meaningless insults that Gohan knows are bullshit and pays no attention to. So trying to play it off as some super meaningful psychological warefare is really grasping.
If you want to interpret that fight that way fine, I'm just pointing out why it doesn't really work.
The context is more or less the same, the original line is just Buu boasting how he's stronger than Gohan and using his family's techniques against him, but not like in the original dub when he's trying to do some psudo-psychological warefare.

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does. It's psychological warfare that doesn't work, so what? It's a great line, there's a reason for Buu to say it. There seems to be an attitude that Gohan should know exactly how Buu's absorption ability works when there's no way he could know that.
"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"Is this really, really something that needs to be totally shut down with such force?
I say it's a fair interpretation to say Buu might know, as we don't know the full extent of what he takes when he absorbs people. It's also fair to say he's just full of shit, but either way, both are valid and there's no need to get shut down the opposite side really.
Lets all just agree that we have different opinions on the matter that aren't really in conflict because it doesn't matter anyway.
One Strip! One Strip!

I like how Kai handled the taunting.
