I'm half-expecting 17 to not really be dead, and just buried under some rubble. Somehow.

Can't wait for Ultra Instinct 17 to show up and knock Jiren into next week.

Okay, this episode was pretty stupid. Vegeta who was supposed to have used up all his power last episode somehow... still has plenty of power left. Jiren power up and doesn't seem stronger for it. He also gets an unneeded tragic backstory.

Like, does Jiren need a tragic backstory to justify why he wants to fight for his universe survival? And why does everyone acts like the Super Dragon Balls are the main motivation for fighting, instead of a nice bonus on top of the primary goal of NOT BEING ERASED.

Also, seeing as how he didn't appear on the sidelines, and no one said anything about his death, I've got to assume Freeza is still in the tournament. Which begs the question... how?

At least it seems like Vegeta will be out next episode... fucking finally.

What's funny to me how is how everyone would complain how Gohan fans wanted him to do more than he should have. Yet, they're perfectly fine with 17 doing more than he should have :V

I have to admit, even I feel a bit bad for Gohan here. It's one thing that Goku and Vegeta outshine him... but fucking 17? Seriously?

I don't even dislike 17, and this arc definitely gave him a lot of cool moments. But holy shit, you could practically tell after a certain point, the writers blatantly had a hard on for him. Even the Roshi shilling wasn't this bad, because at least they showed that despite how good a showing he had, he still had to be bailed out when he got in over his head. 17 hasn't looked bad once in this arc.

He didn't just overshadow Gohan, he basically overshadowed everyone as of this episode. Which is fucking weird as hell.

Oh man!

I just heard the greatest dub line ever:

Whis: Speaking of uncontrollable forces, where are the other fish sausages?

Beerus: They're in mah belly!

The quote might be a bit off, but Beerus' line is exact. Truly, this dub is the best thing about Super.

Edit: Fixed the quote with Whis' proper line.

[up]Not to criticize too harshly, but it says something (bad) about the state of Japanese translations where putting in common, everyday sayings is considered unusual. When IDW translates Italian Disney stories, that's just another day at the office.

It used to be more common in the 90's, especially when 4kids dubs were in their heyday, to have looser dialogue in the dubs instead of a 1-to-1 translation of the Japanese script.

There's opposing schools of thought that all translation should be literal versus translating to capture intention

Translation and interpretation aren't the same thing. Sometimes it's better to translate things less than literally if it gets the feel of what was said across better/just doesn't translate well. A lot of people don't get that.

On the flip side, looser translations can sometimes sound completely out of place for a character to say.

My train of thought is that as long as they're not blatantly making up new stuff that wasn't in the original text, like the original 90s dub, then I'm cool with it.

About Vegeta constantly being punked out of Blue, no it does not make it alright.

He shouldn't even have enough energy to actually reach the transformation much less maintain it in any way. So its still complete & utter bullshit no matter how much you try to justify it.

I like 17 too but by God did they shill him in this tournament. The writers forgot the pecking order.

Am I only one who is going to point out the times Vegeta kept getting punted out of Blue?

I already pointed that out. It doesn't make it any better, because that's not how the forms work.

You shiuldn't be knocked out of a SS form unless you're knocked unconscious or out of energy. Vegeta isn't being knocked unconscious, and he isn't running out of energy because he's able to get up and transform again.

Hell, given that Goku says it takes more energy to transform than it does to maintain the form, it's even WORSE to have Vegeta constantly drop the form only to be able to still transform into it.

And why does everyone acts like the Super Dragon Balls are the main motivation for fighting, instead of a nice bonus on top of the primary goal of NOT BEING ERASED.

Yeah, this is really strange. People have said this tournament shouldn't have stakes to justify everyone fucking around (whereas I'd prefer they just didn't fuck around) but the survival really does overshadow the Super DB prize so they shouldn't have had the erasure if they wanted to make obtaining the balls so important.

I guess the reasoning behind 17 getting such a handjob is also because he's the only one on the team who hasn't appeared in eons. Not counting GT, his cameo in the Buu saga, or his future counterpart getting destroyed by Trunks, his last proper appearance was when Cell absorbed him. The other nine characters had all been around and done stuff as recently as Super itself, even Roshi.

So from a Doylist perspective, it would be a bit of a waste to bring back 17 and not give him a memorable performance. I can't say I expected him to survive all the way to the end boss, which is pretty absurd, but at this point I kinda hope he's still alive and actually winds up winning the tournament just for the sheer audacity of it; the narrative-plausability equivalent of Crosses the Line Twice. If he were to be buried under the rubble, nobody would know since he can't be sensed.
