All the fanservice, nostalgia and pandering really drag it down and make it hard to see it as truly trying to move forward rather than appealing to the past.

So in other words, it's being written by Member Berries?

Sometimes I wonder what's the point of Battle of the Gods & Goku Black if people are just ignore them.

The main problem is that Super seems to have regressed into this sort of status quo based on where things left off from DBZ without really changing anything (the exception is the introduction of Beerus and company.) There's no real impulse to have the characters change or the situation to change or anything.

I really liked this episode. The animation wasn't as good as the last one but the fighting was way better. Loved the tactics on display. Jiren using laser punches for "normal" punches is cool, and it's nice to see Goku and Vegeta working together.

I'm amused and saddened that no one so far even considers Multiverse a worthy successor. -_-

[up]I liked the tactics, but Goku's refusal to fight at full power is getting on my nerves. note

One could only hope that Goku and Vegeta are forced to come up with some plan for knocking Jiren off. Heck, I'm impressed Goku even attempted that instead of trying to brute-force this.

[up] Probably very few people here have read it or know about it compared to the other two. When I found about it I was mostly amused by how much got cribbed from it for the Tournament of Power.

I mean, you're probably not wrong, but until Battle of Gods came out I don't think there was any significant Dragonball content after GT ended in 1997 - besides the video games and Yo! Son Goku and Friends Return (2008). That's a huge gap of time to be sucked in by anything remotely passable as Dragonball media.

To be fair, it's a French webcomic written by a guy who doesn't respond well to criticism, the translations aren't always the best, and the comic's taken several years to make any headway into its plot, so I guess it wouldn't be that talked-about.

What drags Super down is that it's technically an interquel to Z's epilogue, so things can only progress so far without changing the ending.

GT at least takes place after Z's ending, which gives it much more room to do things.

Throughout the episode I kept being frustrated that people kept talking as if they were surprised by how powerful Jiren is, or if it makes any sense for them to expect Goku to be able to accomplish anything.

We've already went through all that so some admittedly cool strategy aside, it felt like a waste.

Toriyama loves having characters remark on how powerful other characters are.

Well its quite easy to see how such constant dick-stroking becomes repetitive & annoying.

Super Plot 2: old arc villain back for revenge (which, to be fair, is the first time Dragon Ball's ever done this plot seriously)

I'd say King Piccolo/Piccolo Jr. did it first.

[up]

He's in a weird place due to the reincarnation thing. He's kinda a different character at the exact same time.

Tao Pai Pai would be a better example. The thing is, when Toriyama brings back an old character, it's usually more for the sake of showing how they are now So Last Season (which includes Frieza during the Cell Arc) so from him to then play it straight with Frieza is really weird.

Toriyama loves having characters remark on how powerful other characters are.

We'll have to wait for the Manga before we can say it's pure Toriyama in this case, then again, its' not like he doesn't do that.

Watching the episode all I have to say is we need a better peanut gallery. Their comments are uninteresting ranging from boring to regurgitating information we already know beforehand & pointing out the obvious making them just redundant. There's nothing fun done with them.

Zeno mimicking Jiren was cute though.

[up] Did Toriyama make Tarble who's only purpose was to gush about how strong the characters are? Cause if so then its most likely a Toriyama thing.

Even ignoring Tarble, there's precedent for it throughout the series. While the power level thing was meant to subvert that a bit, it also plays it straight at times, too. The Ginyu Force, for instance, were basically set up to just be big numbers that Goku more or less effortlessly beats until Ginyu shows up while Vegeta rees in the background about how much stronger he's gotten.

The constant wanking of Jiren's power level has indeed gotten annoying. We get it, he's powerful. All of this effort could have gone towards fleshing his personality out

As it stands, Jiren has little to almost no personality other than a warrior who seeks enlightenment or something of that nature....

The slow-pace & the static nature of the tournament just makes it worse.

Ya think they could have had Belmoud give us some exposition of Jiren in his attempts to prop him up.

[up] Well he's at least getting frustrated so that's something.
