At least looking at it in Kai (and I think the Manga, but it's been awhile) that was supposed to be taken as a serious moment, and Krillin's reaction of "you did this because you know if I died I couldn't come back!" was supposed to tug at your heartstrings.
But what's intended for a moment and what fans take away from it isn't always the same thing...
Actually, it's only a joke now, at the time it was pretty effective. Especially if you watched it as a dumb little kid that doesn't know enough about narrative structure to know they're going to win.
And even then, if you don't know that Namek is a thing that will exist shortly after, they kill Piccolo, so for all intents and purposes, Yamcha, Tien and Chiaotzu, as well as Piccolo and the people Nappa killed, were all gone for good.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariI actually did know it was a thing. I'd read about a lot of what was going to happen before hand.
But since I'd only seen the first arc of Dragonball during that brief airing prior to it, I'd had no idea Yamcha was supposed to be weak, so I took it for granted that he'd win the fight.
Then the damn thing latched on to him, and I was surprised, but I thought he'd break out.....then it fucking exploded.
And this was the Next dimension original dub too. It was still a pretty impactful moment. I knew a lot of overall details about DBZ, but there were plenty of little things I did not know about, and Yamcha's death was one of them.
One Strip! One Strip!People go to the next dimension too much in this series...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Hilariously enough, they are doing that.
Well, Alternate Universe, but close enough.

One Strip! One Strip!Well, he's also the only one beyond Whis and Vados who even knows how to play baseball either.
A rare situation where power is useless and technique saves the day.
One Strip! One Strip!Reflexes more than anything...

Only through plot convenience tho. After all, all of Yamcha's skill is meaningless when you consider that the absolute fastest he can move is so slow that he'd be literally standing still from, say, Goku's perspective.

himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariWe just saw an episode where Arale wrecked Vegeta and forced him to switch from a battle manga fighting style to Rule of Funny.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!

Holy shit.....0_0
That's gonna be the greatest manga ever.
....Guess this means Trunks won't be born though. That's gonna be incredibly to read.
Look at the Wolf Bandit suddenly getting some love.
One Strip! One Strip! It's a filler episodes and filler episodes always shit over as much of the canon as possible.
Remember when Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Chaozu defeated the Ginyu Force despite not even being as powerful as Nappa a few days prior (since they didn't reach Kaiou's planet until Goku left for Namek)?
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!I don't care.
It's fun, and that's the point.
Are we really gonna shit on this just to put the Yamcha fans down?
You know what? It's my fault. I shouldn't have brought up the technique thing. Forget it.
It's just nice to see the guy get win for a change alright.
Now, lets talk about this Yamcha spin-off series.

Oh, I did not know that. I thought that Z coming first was fairly common due to its success but now that I think about it, I don't know why I thought that.
This song needs more love.
