That's some kinda name, yo.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.
Trunks is panicking because if Mai dies while he's in the past there's no way to bring her back. The dragon balls of Earth are gone, and finding the Namekians and their dragon balls is going to be very difficult, as there's simply no more infrastructure on Earth for space travel.

A new DBH commercial was shown off during DBS. Here's a couple of screenshots:

Yeah, but time machine. Trunks should be able to set it to a moment after they left/before they left.
He can't set it to go back in time to before the Androids killed everyone, but nothing's stopping him from returning to his world 10 seconds later.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!
The problem is right now Trunks' time machine doesn't act like a time machine — it's more of a timeline jumper at this point, and doesn't seem to be able to go back up the same timeline either.
Otherwise Fridge Logic would dictate that Trunks take Goku and Vegeta back to when Black first appeared (when he was still relatively weaker) to get rid of him before he messed things up.

But did we ever get a clear idea of how much time had passed since Trunks came back from any of his trips
?
If not, while Trunks machine doesn't act like a normal time machine there's nothing saying that it creates any sort of time lag. When Trunks left in the History of Trunks special it was daylight, and when he came back it was still daytime. Not exactly strong evidence but it supports the idea that the machine itself can jump to a parallel world in no time at all.
In DBS, how much time had passed between when Trunks went back and when Black followed him?
Saiyans are notoriously stupid
. Like, they didn't take any senzu beans, and they didn't bring backup, and Goku might be the reason Black's so powerful to begin with.
But that aside, Trunks can just bring them to a few seconds after they left if the time machine is incapable of bringing them backward. Of course there's no evidence it can do this but apart from Rule of Drama I don't see anything that implies it can't.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Right, the one Cell comes from.
The "current" Future Trunks used knowledge of Cell gained in the past to anticipate his attack and survive, so that timeline wasn't the original.
Come to think of it, that original timeline is in an even more bleak state. Survived the Androids and Cell but has nothing whatsoever to stop Black and Zamasu... and that's assuming it also survived Buu.

Boo wouldn't exist in that timeline...seeing how there's no one to collect energy from.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice."Cell's. It's his time travel that causes the Future Trunks we know to end up in a timeline where he survives."
Cell's timeline isn't the original. Cell specifically said that Trunks killed Frieza and King Cold in his time. In the original timeline, Goku did it. Although, Goku still died of the virus, so Toriyama probably made a mistake.

They'd have to show up anyway...to retrieve Boo's egg. cocoon, pod thing.

Don't forget the sixth and final one, Z-sometimes Y-no.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
