"I do agree him giving up his power for his dad would have been a good way to send him off, especially since you could see it as giving back what his dad gave him. And its definitely I could accept as a reasonable to the character's arc and time in the spotlight. Someone brought up that Goku's Blood Knight personality of always wanting to fight as his primary goal leaves him rather aimless as a character, beyond simply wanting to fight people. Its pretty apparent in the current arc too since Vegeta actually wants to beat Black for hurting his family whereas Goku is just "He looks strong, I wanna fight" but I bet money that its going to be Goku who wins in the end. This was fine in Dragon Ball where he actually was not the strongest like he is now, and when the series still had a "Journey to the West" vibe to it. Even in Z it was fine because Goku himself was Out of Focus and only showed up at the arc's climax."
Goku does have a goal other than beat strong people. His goal is to surpass and beat Beerus, and Goku always said he wants to be the best. So his main goal has been To Be a Master since the beginning.
And Vegeta would have more invested in Black since he killed and tormented his future family. Goku doesn't take stuff personally unless it's in his face, like seeing the bodies of his friends. And as mad as Vegeta supposedly was, he didn't try to cut into Goku and Black's fight, saying it's personal.
Also, Goku isn't the strongest in Super. He's the strongest mortal in U7, but there are several people stronger than him just like the original Dragon Ball like Beerus, Whis, Zen-O, and maybe Hit.
I don't think Goku cares about being the strongest. Well, not as his primary goal. His primary goal is being strong enough to have good challenges. Vegeta's primary goal is being the strongest, and fights for him are a way to prove he's the strongest.
"If you weren't so crazy I'd think you were insane."Yeah, that doesn't really apply to the now times...

It might be a bit late, but I finally was able to read the manga start of the Future Trunks saga for Super. It's mostly what we've already seen, but looks like Toyotaro took his time in taking away any ambiguity to what happened to Mai, at least where the manga is concerned — she drops from a balcony due to the shockwave of Black's ki attack and is then buried by the rubble it caused. Then we get a dramatic arm drop
◊ (after Trunks digs her out of the rubble), and THEN the place catches fire. Ouch.
Unrelated: Are you trying to hug Trunks there, Mai? Or are you giving him a necklock
◊?

She's trying to give him a neck lock, she just doesn't know how because she's never been in a real fight.
And it's your fault for bringing it up, but if Goku needs more development(probably not) or more of his depths explored (wouldn't hurt), well...
Every single one of Goku's rivals did one of those things, usually on the exploring part rather than developing but even Yamucha first showed us how Goku, until then comically invincible, handled under pressure. Yamucha got lucky and was swatted aside every time prior but did figure out how to change him back from his werewolf monkey form.
Krillen of course highlighted how dumb and naive Goku was, we kind of already got that from Blooma, but the difference was is that for all of inadequacies we see through Krillen that Goku's rather clever in his own way.
Tien has the least impact, because he's basically there to make Goku into less of a killing machine and become more forgiving but then Piccolo takes over that role and does it much more effectively. Goku never hated Tien the way he did Piccolo.
Vegeta teaches Goku pride, not only in his own abilities but teaches who he is beyond that, his cultural background, his race he initially despises, and teaches him to accept and respect it despite.
Besides his rivals, other characters play their role. As said, Gohan's way of suddenly powering up with rage, a trait never before seen, as we've seen Goku's anger just make him sloppy and more easily defeated and then see the same with Nappa...ended up leading to something. Contrary to popular belief Goku does have a similar to his son, and when it comes out it's even more spectacular. But the most interesting parts of his character are either built or revealed through prolonged interaction with his rivals, and the widow's peak has outstayed its welcome.

A slight correction to an earlier post about Dragon Ball Fusions, apparently the female Ginyu Force aren't fusions, but actual characters of their own like the protagonists Tekka (the created character) and Pinich. Also, the evil looking Maxi-Fusion is a Maxi-Fusion from an unknown team and seems to be the main villain of the game.
Also also, DBF will apparently have 334 PLAYABLE CHARACTERS! This is including the fusions, of course, but still a pretty hefty roster, nonetheless.

My guess on how the roster works is that the first 100 or so characters are the normal cast while the other 200 or so are fusion characters. You can level these characters up, trade with and/or fight friends with your characters. With Street Pass, it's possible for your CAC to fuse with another person's CAC, so that kinda raises the character count beyond 334, but only technically.
I'm also pretty sure Maxi-Fusions don't count as characters, but I don't know really.

He might have been in Heroes though, I'm not sure. They kind of add everything. I'm pretty sure I saw Bulma's panties as a playable character somewhere. Evil Bardock wouldn't be that far of a stretch.
