Actually, we stopped having unlockable characters when dumbass big name publishers figured out you could gate those behind a paywall instead of a skill/effort wall, which generated more money for them.

Back in the day, you had to beat the game in a specific way, input a cheat code or even do something completely counterintuitive to access the secret characters. These days, the secret character's portrait in the selection screen is plain as day... it's just that the publisher told the devs to stick that character behind a paywall so that they could make more money.

(And yes, this generally is an insistence of the publisher's, since game devs don't really make money from sales or DLC, the publisher does)

Xenoverse does lock you out of mentors unless you were at the required level to train with them, so that should go.

You're right, that should be more like...training with character "A" allows you to train with related character "B"

Yeah, like you need to train with Ginyu to train with Freeza, or train with Goku to train with Beerus. That would be better and more interesting.

[up] IIRC, you do have to finish training with Goku in order to train with Beerus (At least that's one of the requirements).

Last week's episode of Kai cleared up my memory of Cell's backstory better. Gero made Cell first, but the project was so long in formulating that he moved back to Androids to build something he could see in his own lifetime.

It doesn't explain why he built 17 and 18 after 16, given that Cell implied that Gero's computer was the one who came up with the idea that Cell could fuse with 17 and 18 to achieve his perfect form, so they weren't created just to feed him. Maybe Gero made them, like Cell, simply because he could, building a better human or something like that, and also trying to kill Goku in the bargain evil grin

[up] 16 was apparently intended as a Replacement Goldfish for his dead son. He was never supposed to be a fighter, and certainly not be fed to Cell.

And just like his real son, Gero locked him in the basement without access to food or water.

[up][up] As 16 was supposed to never be destroyed, Gero made him both the most peaceful (to decrease the likelihood of him getting into fights) and the strongest (so if he did get into fights he could win them).

"And now that it's time to build robots for actual combat, I will cunningly decrease the amount of weaponry I give them."

Brilliant man, Gero.

To be fair, given that they wound up rebellious... He was totes right in giving them less weaponry and power.

Well, he did that with 18 because he thought too much power was what made 17 defective. Who knows about 17, though.

Or maybe he could have built them not to be rebellious. Nineteen and sixteen both worked out fine in that respect.

This just goes to show you can't trust orphans. Leave them out in the streets with the other strays.

Nineteen was purely mechanical because he couldn't get those two under control.

Edit: Which, again, doesn't explain why he went back to the old energy-absorption model when he did it right with 16, but, eh.

19 and 16 were actually Androids...personality they do not have organically.

He could've brain-washed the siblings, but why do that?

Kidnapping orphans instead of sticking with robots just seems like an odd decision to me. They were weaker and didn't even follow orders.

[up][up]He tried that, it didn't work.

[up]They were far stronger than everything else he made besides 16. Originally they were even stronger than Cell, which is why he had to go around eating entire cities before confronting them.

... Which makes me wonder, why doesn't Cell have an in-built remote control function for the androids or, failing that, access to a backup copy of the remote?

Seems like a no brainer if Cell's first form is weaker than them.

Agreed.

Well, also that the entire Cell Arc was constantly changing.

We all already know why, so no reason to dwell on it. At this point, we're trying to make up in universe reasons for it when there is no in universe reason. It's just that thing kept changing constantly.

I always thought Gero made 17 and 18 cyborgs because they were supposed to be absorbed by Cell, and a completely mechanical one can't be absorbed.

LSBK Since: Sep, 2014

As for why Gero would bother with 17 and 18, I'd image he was thinking about turning himself into a cyborg and wanted a couple of test subjects first. After that didn't work out, he settled for a weaker energy-absorption model body, instead.
