~fly in on Kinto-un~ Did someone say "Live-Action Dragon Ball"?!
In regards to aura, I'm planning on doing something similar to the series: an identifiable spiky shape of an aura, though it won't be white so much as a slightly lighter shade of clear. The aura will provide its own dramatic lighting, as they do in the series.
I said a thing about the first Super Saiyan transformation that I actually thought was really neat and weird and I kinda wanna talk about it so I'm copying and pasting from the fanfic thread
.
There's a bunch of other stuff there about other things.
Here's the thing about the first time Goku went Super Saiyan. Goku's base power level when he started the fight with Frieza was 3 million. As a Super Saiyan he was fifty times that.
But he didn't go Super Saiyan at the start of the fight. He transformed after he had used up and tried everything else he had. Kaioken, kamehama, spirit bomb, everything. He was beaten and bruised and could barely stand. Piccolo had to drag him out of the ocean.
His power level at that point was probably not 3 million. I think he was a little lower than that. He was running on fumes.
But he transforms, and suddenly he's got all his energy back. Fifty times what he started with. Even though transforming is explicitly an energy drain.
Even though he hasn't eaten anything. Or slept. Or healed the various injuries he had received from Frieza up to that point.
Like.
Seriously, where did it all come from?
I mean, let's be clear, Goku almost lost to Yamcha because he was tired, hot and starving.
Before he turned Super Saiyan, he nearly blew up his heart with that Kaioken x20 Kamehameha, and then Frieza used him like a pinball.
Goku has limits to his energy reserves and stamina.
Don't get me started.

Probably bad, it would look like bad.
Mostly make the characters glow. Because Power Glows.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariToriyama didn't think about it.
Or he just decided being Super Saiyan recharges you and then didn't really care.
One Strip! One Strip! They Just Didn't Care is a thing. It's a plothole, plain and simple.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariProbably, but people Fan Wank those things away all the time. No real harm as long as that plot hole doesn't become an actual plot point.

I'll accept that.
This as well. I mean, there have only been two times where a character transformed in mid battle, and one happened just yesterday. It's not really much of an issue.
One Strip! One Strip! It's hard to argue that Goku had nothing left at that point. The x20 Kaioken took everything he had and ripped up his body to the point he couldn't remain levitating or standing. He dropped himself to the ground and promptly fell to his knees afterwards.
He found the strength to get back on his feet only to start getting the shit beat out of him in a much less even fight by Frieza. He then spends a lot of the Genki-Dama's charging period getting kicked around defenselessly. Goku wasn't just out of ki; he was physically exhausted and beat up pretty bad.
Then he transformed and it was like all of that doesn't matter because he's a Super Saiyan now. x50 boost or not, Goku was in absolutely no condition to fight.
But, important note, neither was Frieza. Frieza had just taken a Genki-Dama to the face and, I remind you, not yet in Full Power form. If both fighters were in pristine condition, Frieza would have been at about 60k when Goku became 150k. Even if Goku only had 2/5 of his power that he could draw on in his state, he'd still be even with Frieza if the latter hadn't been torn up by the preceding fight.
By the time Frieza charges up to Full Power, he's taken even more damage from Goku, who's powerful enough to No-Sell anything and everything Frieza did to him up to that point. And then Frieza's power starts bleeding....

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. From the comments section of this fic: "I feel like she's the protagonist of a normal shonen anime who gets thrown headlong into the middle of a moving narrative and has to roll with it."
That's it. That's Videl's character.
EDIT: Fuck I'm imagining an AU where Videl was actually a magical girl.
Like.
Like, picture that.
Imagine if Dragon Ball had ended up like the Marvel universe or with a dozen spin-offs all in different genres.
You have the racing anime with Piccolo driving cars.
The cop procedural drama with Krillin. Maybe also the Superhero anime with the Great Saiyaman and Saiyagirl and Saiyaboy.
The high school anime. The magical girl anime.
God. It would have been awful. I wish it was a thing.

No, she probably would. Mr. Satan is supposedly on par with the average fighters from the 21 Tenkaichi Budokai, and Videl (at least when she was actively training) was stated as being stronger than he is, which would make her decently powerful in early Dragonball. Not up to, say, Goku's or Krillen's level, but not too far behind them either.

Yes, but what would it look like?
This is one of those things like speedlines where it works in one medium, but doesn't necessarily make much sense in another. It's everywhere in animation, but in live-action, we don't even have anything that reasonably resembles such a concept. It's hard to conceive of because literally nothing exists in reality that that aura effect could be considered an animated facsimile of.
Which might actually be the point, because Battle Auras aren't meant to be visible. They're basically an animated representation of what the ki-sensing characters are feeling from each other.
The closest I can think of is heat distortion
◊, the effect that causes visual blur in super-heated air.
