@Ms CC 93 Well, no it doesn't, because the mocking Yamcha gets comes entirely from the fans (well, and video game developers).

I would say that Dimps and Spike are both pretty big fans.

Well yeah, that's what I'm saying.

The developers mock him because they are also fans, and therefore are aware of Yamcha's status as the Fandom punching bag.

@Saiga No offense, but I don't agree. He even gets mocked In-Universe. On Family Guy, at least all the characters get mocked at one point.

DBZ singled out characters to derail and only Yamcha gets mocked In-Universe. He was even mocked by Mr. Popo for crying out loud!!!

Here's a video of him getting mocked In-Universe.

I agree with Handsome Rob, even though I'm not a fan of Yamcha.

That scene of Popo mocking Yamcha was not only anime filler, but was based on a manga scene where Popo mocks Goku. So nope.

Yamcha is so pathetic the anime itself makes up new things just to insult him.

What Popo said would be true to any of those 5.

But Yamcha just had to be the dumb one that goes and questions what he said. Goddamit Yamcha, he is pals with God, he know what he's talking about!

Popo is so strong he can keep up with two Super Saiyans going all-out at him. Compared to him, everyone up through the Android Saga is weak.

This may or may not be true in the manga, given that I strongly suspect that scene to be anime filler, but haven't actually read the manga to know for certain.

At his strongest in the manga (after training with the humans in the Saiyan arc) he's got a power level of 1,039. Actually weaker than post-training Yamcha.

Him taking on Goten and Trunks is just filler.

Wow, the anime had a LOT of filler, huh?

Dragon Ball Kai cut the Saiyan - Cell stuff in half and still didn't remove all the filler.

In other words, the anime is actually mostly filler/padding.

Indeed.

Why did Kai keep any filler, anyway?

They kept it where it was difficult to edit out (like if they tied filler into canon events originally, and thus couldn't separate them without redoing it) or in some cases just to make sure an episode ended on the note they wanted to (reveals and plot twists).

Because they used old footage instead of reanimating everything.

What filler remained, as such? I recall the extended Captain Ginyu and Bulma miniplot (Why did they need to keep that?)

Almost all of the Goku vs Freeza fight. One of the biggest cases of filler in the anime, especially the final segment (I divide that fight into three segments: base/kaio-ken Goku vs Freeza, Genki-Dama attempt, and SS Goku vs 100% Freeza). And that scene where second form Freeza chases Krillin, Gohan fighting 100% Freeza (and not being atomized with a glare), and Goku's dream where Vegeta talks to him while fighting Freeza, et cetera.

Anime!Popo is not to be fucked with. Those kids are stronger than Piccolo, who was stronger than Semi-Perfect Cell, so his ability to hold his own against them and tank a kick while laughing speaks volumes. He'd wipe the floor with anyone before Perfect Cell.

  • Bardock special footage was added in episode 1 to create new filler
  • Some of the filler at Goku's house in episode 1
  • Some of the Snake Way filler and Gregory training
  • Some of the footage of the people at Roshi's house watching the Saiyan battle
  • Bulma taking a bath
  • Some scenes on Freeza's ship of men telling him things
  • Bulma trying to get the Dragon Balls on her own
  • Vegeta beating up Ginyu before the body change
  • Gohan imagining what Goku in Ginyu's body would be like (based on a manga cover, though)
  • Some King Vegeta flashbacks, although they're actually moved
  • Kuririn evading Freeza in the crevices of a small island
  • As mentioned, Bulma-Ginyu shenanigans
  • Goku tripping out underwater
  • A lot of the scenes in the Goku/Freeza battle which show Freeza having an advantage
  • Gohan confronting Freeza after Goku is knocked into lava and believed by Freeza to be dead
  • Vegeta meeting Goku and Freeza after being brought back
  • Vegeta taking Dr. Brief's spaceship into space
  • The extended scenes of the wishes made on the Namekian Dragon Balls on Earth
  • The filler at the beginning of the "Trunks Saga" that shows Vegeta living at capsule corp
  • Flashback of Cold finding Freeza and rebuilding him
  • Extended version of the Trunks/Freeza battle
  • Flashback to Goku escaping Namek and landing on Planet Yardrat
  • The filler of the Z warriors training for the Androids
  • Early Android arc is filler free until Cell shows up. Hurray!
  • Imperfect Cell vs Kuririn was kept.
  • Satan's disciples were kept.
  • The Z fighters futilely trying to attack Cell during the final beam struggle were kept.

In addition, there was still some padding in the fights. I remember that there was a fair bit of padding in Vegeta vs Cell for instance.

There weren't any entire filler episodes, though, right? Mainly just short scenes?

That's right, no full filler episodes. Although 54 is, like, 90% filler.

#3598: Sep 26th 2013 at 8:33:42 PM

That's good, at least.

I don't mind the filler that makes fights longer (Not as in Inaction Sequences, but actual fighting), personally. The silly subplots like Fake Namek or Bulma-Ginyu are rather annoying, though.

I suppose they were mandatory at the time, though. It's not like they could just say "Nope, no new episodes until Toriyama cranks out some more material." without going off the air or something.

Well, they could have done that if anime adapations were produced in seasons instead of a constant slog of 1-episode-a-week-until-we're-cancelled.

Or maybe if they just gave the manga more of a head start. tongue

Seasons would have worked, though.
