You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Goku was pretty merciless as a kid. As noted, he killed Black as the latter tried to flee. When Tao Pai Pai pleaded for mercy, Goku was just confused by the gesture and was in the process of asking Upa for advice before Tao threw his grenade. He had a pretty black and white view of combat outside the tournaments: if Goku was throwing punches, it was because this guy is bad so Goku would kill the s.o.b. with violence. He didn't really understand mercy.
Piccolo Jr. changed all that. The consequences of Piccolo's death and conflation of mortal foe with tournament rival resulted in Goku acting to prevent God from killing him; he didn't want to lose the Dragon Balls, God, or a rival as powerful and fun to fight as Piccolo, so he chose mercy for the first time in his life.
That stuck with him. He tried to offer mercy to Raditz, to Nappa, to Vegeta, the Ginyus, and Frieza. It became his thing for a while. It didn't often work and, as demonstrated with Raditz, Goku would still rather go for the kill than lose the fight. He wasn't stupid about it.
And then Frieza happened. Frieza warped Goku's sense of mercy, to the point that when he made the offer it was already a Cruel Mercy. Frieza pissed him off like nobody has since PiccoloHey! and he rubbed his mercy in Frieza's face. He wields it as a weapon, intended to shatter Frieza's pride forever on the sharpened edge of compassion.
That backfired horrifically. Not only did Frieza force Goku to kill him, but he came back and threatened the Earth. Goku expressed regret to Trunks that he didn't kill him back on Namek, and he took this to heart too. Goku never offered mercy again.
Ignoring the Flanderization in ROF, that is.
Dragon Ball Super
So, I finished the Battle of Gods arc of Super and wow, that was pointless. ~.~ The last few episodes are just endless padding of the Goku v. Beerus fight. I forgot how shitty Toei's fight scenes are.
- BEERUS: You've done well but now I'll use my TRUE POWER!
- GOKU: Oh no, you're so powerful! Wait, I'm matching it! I've unlocked more power of Super Saiyan God!
- BEERUS: Then I'll just have to use my TRUE POWER.
This happens at least four times. There's also at least four slow-motion God Kamehamehas and several minutes of Goku and Beerus staring at each other and screaming to power up.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Oh, even the end of the fight was needlessly padded. Goku's out of power and drifting back into atmosphere, burning up as he falls. I'm thinking this is it, this is the point where Beerus has the chance to destroy the Earth then spares it because he enjoyed fighting Goku.
Nope. Goku suddenly flares up as a Super Saiyan out of nowhere, flies back up, has another brief bout with Beerus before running out of power and falling back into atmosphere, the exact same thing we just saw five minutes ago. Even Beerus is fed up with this, voicing my exact thoughts: "Oh come on! That was the perfect finish and you ruined it!"
Again: when even your characters start getting impatient to just f*cking move on with the plot, that's bad. I want to call this the worst fight in DB history, but that's only because I've mentally blocked out most of Toei's butcherings. I'm sure the forty some-odd episodes of Frieza were worse.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Didn't Black try and fire a missile at him? And he tried to continue the fight even though it was kinda pointless (since the wish would have been a waste and the Red Ribbon army didn't really need the Dragonball).
One Strip! One Strip!DBH God Mission 8 will focus on Wrath of the Dragon.

Yes. Goku kicked it into a building, whereupon Black realized how f*cked he was, announced that he was fleeing, and tried to escape. Goku was having none of this and smashed through his mech, causing it to explode and kill him.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Oh right.
Well, he still should have surrendered right after he found out the real reason for the Red Ribbon Army.
If he'd tried it then, maybe then Goku might have let him go.
Of course, that's just a guess. It's entirely possible Goku might have killed him then as well.
One Strip! One Strip!Even though I know there's no 'filler' in the series per se, I just kind of selectively ignore what I don't like in Super's retellings. Like Episode 12.
I still find it strange that the Goku/Beerus fight was padded out so much, but the Goku/Golden Freeza fight was incredibly rushed. I don't know which attempt was worse.
The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby! The movie retellings really aren't worth it unless you care a lot about minor plot holes in the Resurrection 'F' movie. They fixed those. Kind of.
Anyway, with the new arc, I think I'm realising why they made Beerus so much more of a dick in Super - it's to contrast with Champa. You know, how Universe 7 is the 'evil universe'? Well, it seems to apply to the Gods of Destruction, as well.
The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby!I wouldn't mind if Dragonball Heroes went this way. Better than Golden Cooler. Going this direction might even make Pan the first Super Saiyan.
Dude.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!
I think the fight against the two bio warriors in the second movie is a better example.
Not that this is bad.
One Strip! One Strip! It's sad when a videogame has the best version of the Goku VS Beerus fight. Xenoverse's version is my favorite, simply because it's not dragged out, it's not padded out, and most importantly, it actually has Goku fight until he can't fight anymore, since instead of him just surrendering and admitting defeat, Goku fights until he loses consciousness and Whis takes him away to safety while Beerus and the Time Patroller stomp Demigra.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariI take it Toei must have cared about their animation at one point. Hell, just look at the original anime: the fight scene between Goku and Jackie Chun is so fluidly animated that it's breathtaking to look at. Vegeta using the Final Flash on Cell is magnificent to see. Goku and Vegeta's Kamehameha-Galick Gun duel was fucking awesome to behold.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?Actually the animation in Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z were actually done on the cheap and there was nothing outstandingly animated in the series. The best was decent, especially compared to other series during the same timeframe.
The best animation in Super blows away the best animation in Dragon Ball. I also find it funny that Goku given mercy to Frieza in RF is considered Flandertion when AT wrote the entire script and the movie is exactly the same to his script except for some dialogue changes.
As for Goku vs. Beerus, one of my favorite fights in the series. Funny how opinions work.
And on Toei's crappy fight scenes. I put all the fights in RF against most of the fights in the entire series. And Toei did it themselves since AT only gave a note saying, "Earth warriors fight 1000 men army, do you best to animate". I am not exaggerating, that is actually in AT's original script.
