It was a self-destruct bomb. Its a last resort thing that Cell(and 16. apparently)was able use manually. I remember it being mentioned that both the Androids and Cell had bombs implanted in them.
If it was his own power, wouldn't he be able to stop it if anything were to go wrong?
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Just thinking about something....Cell was extremely lucky.
Killing and finding trunk's time machine, Absorbs a weakened 17 thanks to Piccolo and 17 fight. Thanks to Krillin and Vegeta he attained his perfect form. Barely dodged Vegeta's final flash. Surviving from a single cell and gaining more power. Gohan playing with cell and not killing him.
There is probably more. I don't think there was a DBZ villain as lucky as cell was when it comes to achieving goals. A lot of the times he was outmatched or outplayed as much as he could outmatch others, (piccolo, 16[maybe],tien, vegeta, trunks, Gohan, Goku for example)
youtube.com/Fire Trainer 92Not all of that was luck. Cell was so far beyond 17 in terms of power level, even if the kid had been in top form he couldn't have done anything. Same for Vegeta - the Final Flash only hurt Cell because he let it hurt him.
He was lucky about Krillin not blowing 18 up though. And most of the time he relied on his intelligence to survive rather than his overwhelming power.
After King P Iccolo he seemed the most competent villain.

Well, killing Trunks wasn't luck. And I'm pretty sure that was his plan when he went to kill him. It's more like the bad luck of Trunks having a time machine (and thus getting a remote to shut down the Androids) was offset by the good luck of Trunks having a time machine (and thus Cell getting to go back to a timeline with Androids).
It was Cell's speed that let him avoid the Final Flash at the last second, and his rarely-used-in-Perfect-Form common sense ability that made him realize it was dangerous.
And yeah, he had the power to absorb 17 (who wasn't weakened, infinite stamina remember?) it was just luck that he could FIND 17. But it would have happened eventually, as no-one could find Cell either.
Daimao was probably the next luckiest villain I can think of. First Mafuba failed due to a miss, second time it can't be used due to a crack (and it's an ordinary rice cooker, so if Tenshinhan noticed sooner he'd just get a different one and no more Daimao) he was also pretty lucky that Tenshinhan was around once Goku started beating his ass to use as a hostage.
Still probably the most competent villain - being lucky isn't a bad thing as long as you've got other things going for you.
Oh, the manga says nothing about the source of Cell's self-destruction. But it was confirmed in the manga that 17 and 18 had the bombs inside them. However, the Daizenshuu says that Cell uses 17's artificial energy generator to fuel his barrier technique and might say something about the self-destruction.

I think that's why I liked the Android Arc so much as the advantage went multiple ways until Cell got perfect form. You could say the same for Namek I guess though. It just seemed like Cell was just a more intelligent villain than freeza.

Is it okay to just post that link here?
I thought we don't directly link to certain sources anymore?
One Strip! One Strip! You know, it is easy to forget Piccolo has Kami in him now, but I think that actually explains some of the changes in his personality and also means he technically is not one of the younger characters anymore. Did Piccolo inherit his father's eternal youth or does he just retain it from being born relatively recently?
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackThe absorption of Kami may have changed his personality and memories. But I think his body is still the same that was born just after King Piccolo's Death, so he is just a few years older than Gohan. He will probably get wrinkles when he ge older, just like Dende will after them (he seemed to have aged to adulthood way faster than Dende, thought, maybe he is stuck in his father age?)
And I believe that since Cell is a Dr. Gero's Android, and every android was built with a self-destruck mechanism (not only 16, 17 and 18, but way back, #8 had that bomb too), it's not unlikely that he put a similar bomb in his ultimate creation.
maybe it wasn't an actual bomb, but still a mechanism pre-programed by Dr. Gero since the begining.
But of course it could be his own power, Chaotzu and Vegeta both could explode themselves by their own power, why would Cell not? I just don't think Dr. Gero would built Cell without a characteristic that all his other creations had.
There won't be an English dubbing for a while. And even then, what with all this controversey over the voice-acting from Dragonball Kai, I'm not so confident I'll hear the voices I grew up with. Though, Kai hasn't gotten up to the Buu Saga yet last I checked, so maybe I'll be in luck.
I came to ask: does anybody remember what event caused Dr. Gero t built Android 19 and turn himself into a Cyborg? Was it ever touched on? TFS 37 just reminded me that Trunks came back with no idea who Androids 19 or 20 were.
Now we know that Cell monkeyed around in the past, but he was in a larval state when he traveled back in time. Seems unlikely that his traveling back would have affected Gero's design builds.
Maybe, since Trunks came back to stop Frieza instead of Goku, Gero used different design models? I honestly don't remember.

Cell can't keep blowing himself up, that self-destruct bomb inside him is a one time use deal.
