He still instantly identified the Janken Fist, Grandpa Gohan, Ox King, the Kamehameha, Boss Rabbit, and the Bansho Fan. And I don't like that his interest waned because that's sad: a kid super into martial arts giving up after seeing that there was more than he knew. I don't like that story and I'd like if it was different. If anything, seeing new stuff should've rekindled that passion in his heart to learn and grow.

No Hamburger Time, the idea of them being "equals" might be an innovation of the dub but the "superhero team" was invented by TOEI's anime.

Yamcha took up Martial Arts simply because everyone around him was doing it. He never really had a personal interest in Martial Arts, it was a means to an end to him.

That actually does make a bit of sense to me, but [up][up] makes a good point as well.

It is interesting that he was so knowledgeable about so many things in the Martial arts world for someone who was just using it as a means to an end.

I think you may both have a point. He learned both because he wanted to, and because he needed to, but as time went on, both of those things were no longer necessary, and he could no longer really do much anyway, so he folded and put his skills to other uses as both a Baseball player, and now a Private Security dude.

I guess this is why they say Yamcha is the most normal and down to earth of the group.

Yamcha survived on his own as a bandit because of his martial arts knowledge and ability. Those were vital to him.

As they stopped being vital to him, he lost interest in them.

I don't get why you think this is sad. He's leaving his past life behind him and becoming a responsible adult who puts what talent he has into generating a stable income for himself so that he may enjoy life in luxury through entirely legal means.

He's basically living the way we wish we could live, up to and including being basically invincible to 99.999999% of the people he'll ever come across. He can Superman the hell out of whatever city he's in.

Why would his martial arts knowledge become useless when he's training under a martial arts master?

Just because you're interested in something doesn't mean you want to do it for a living. It's the difference between watching a movie and deciding to become an actor.

Good for him. My brother geeked out over Harry Potter, but that doesn't mean he wants to become a wizard.

No, it's more like the difference between making films on Youtube and releasing them for profit. Yamucha was past the spectator phase.

Though Gohan has given up on that it'd be cool if Videl didn't. That's basically what she was doing before they met only without the costume.

Seriously why aren't they Super Hero'ing it up anymore? It's not like it's even remotely dangerous for them. Hell, they don't even need a secret identity, because there's no one who's a realistic threat to either of their families. Not with Majin Buu around anyway.

Gohan at least was clearly having a lot of fun doing it, and he was putting all his immense power to good use.

Toriyama got bored of it. That's why.

Plus, if you recall, Vegeta got rid of all the evilest people with the last wish, so for the time being there isn't anyone left who can cause that level of trouble that superheroes would be needed.

Just cause the ep.

Well, Vegeta lived his dream for a while there. Even if Freiza screwed him at the end, I'm sure that was very cathartic for him to get some measure of revenge.

And now, we finally begin the new arc. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Question:

What's the point, narratively, of them still training, learning new techniques, and growing as martial artists if they'll never be strong enough to be relevant? It would be a subplot that would never actually reach a conclusion.

Like, should we really devote page time to show that Yamcha is now marginally less outclassed by Goku and will survive .0000001 seconds longer against the new villain?

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

Yes. Because being relevant to fighting the next big villain isn't the point. The point is for them to grow as characters and as martial artists. Again, you don't quit Karate just because your best friend is a much higher belt than you are.

It's not that they'll be relevant, it's that they'll be stronger than they were before...because they're still training, showing that they still care even though it's only Tien who still cares.

Losing shape isn't a likely thing for any of them.

But where does the humans practicing martial arts for its own sake actually lead? Where is the payoff in this? When do we know they've reached some kind of milestone? How can we show some kind of variation to actually keep this interesting? Finally, what relevance does this have to the ongoing plot where space monkeys are beating up naked aliens that apparently lack genitalia, bugs that drink people with their tail and monsters made of pink taffy? Because I assure you, it's quite annoying when the main plot is shoved aside to show us minor characters doing absolutely nothing.

Yeah. As much as I would like them to do something, Toriyama made so they can't have any relevance any more.

Krillin has a wife, Tien moved away from being an Assassin, Yamcha...exists, and Piccolo is whole.

None of them (more the first three then Piccolo really) have any reason to be active fighters any more, nor would they be relevant even if they tried (barring this past arc, where if Gohan had been in proper shape, he'd have solo'ed everyone bar Frieza himself).

I hate it, but that's how it is now.

Now there's little reason 18 isn't getting involved in battles outside of Stay in the Kitchen bullshit, but that's a whole other thing.

you know Im not sure what to think about the fact that veget became a god just cause. on the one hand thats how he became a super sayian in the first place, on the other they couldnt even bs an explanation that being the sayian prince, and being one of the ones who did the ceromony let him use the powers after sparring against goku?

Well apparently the only explanation we have is that Vegeta's rage boost against Beerus was actually a permanent boost, like Super Saiyan God was for Goku. Vegeta, through training with Whis for six months and mastering his ki, apparently managed to gain the Saiyan beyond God state, and being around Whis and Beerus for so long affected his body and started to give him divine ki.
