Him not making money kind of makes sense. Even without the prize fights just one of those fish can feed him for days and he lives on a planet with dinosaurs, one of which could probably feed the family for a week. It's how he's lived for seven years and then some when he was essentially told to do it again by his master. He's learned to dodge civilization and be happy dirt poor.
In fact, the farming job makes perfect sense. Even with cracking the bones open for marrow that's a lot of material they can't eat unless they soften the bones by boiling them, which would be impractical with animals of that size...so fertilizer, use that water for irrigation, have even more food, enough for a surplus. Now they can make money, that isn't really needed, so they can save.
Buldogue's lawyerHe's with them when he's home. It's just that his idea of going out and training isn't, say, a night or two before coming back and checking in with his family. He disappears for months or even years at a time. He's been doing that since he was a kid, going off and never seeing any of his friends while he trains for three years inbetween tournaments except when they're relevant to his current adventure, like that time he needed Bulma to repair the Dragon Radar.
It's just how he is.
He was with his family during Gohan's infancy, but then was killed by Piccolo to stop Raditz. Not his fault.
He then remained dead for a year to train for the Saiyans. His choice, but a reasonable one.
He came back to life and was immediately hospitalized from the fight with Vegeta. Not his fault. Everyone would have died if Vegeta wasn't defeated.
Gohan went to Namek, Goku followed, Chi-Chi remained on Earth. Goku spent very little time with his son on account of being immediately incapacitated when his ship killed the Ginyus the battle with Captain Ginyu took its toll on him, and only getting out just in time to fight Frieza. Once again, not his fault.
Goku escaped Namek and refused to come home, instead remaining on Yardrat to learn Instantaneous Movement. Now it's his fault. Goku abandoned his family for the better part of a year to pursue a new technique.
He returned to Earth and requested three years to train Gohan with Piccolo. He and Chi-Chi had an ugly fight over that, one that was ultimately won when Goku accidentally smacked Chi-Chi through a wall, tree, and rock. She conceded the point immediately but insisted that afterwards, Gohan stops training and focuses solely on her studies. Those three years were with Chi-Chi's somewhat coerced consent, so it's entirely likely Goku and Gohan lived at home. Three years with Goku's family.
Goku went into the Room of Spirit and Time and trained Gohan for an entire year without ever seeing Chi-Chi, but it was only a day on the outside so she didn't notice and it didn't adversely affect her life. Gohan, meanwhile, was with Goku the entire time. Nothing wrong with that.
Then Goku died and refused the plan to use Namekian Dragon Ball to revive him under very debatable logic. Here he was again abandoning his family by choice.
Seven years later, Goku came back to life and returned to his family. In total, he was present for approximately 7/8 years of Gohan's childhood, with the missing years being a consequence of external circumstances some of the time, but the largest chunks being the result of Goku under-prioritizing his family. Yardrat is inexcusable, and I'm not too big on his decision to remain dead.
In conclusion, Goku lives with and enjoys the company of his family when it's convenient. He has never chosen his family over his training and has, on one occasion, chosen his training over his family, but when the two do not conflict, he's happy to live with and enjoy the company of his wife and son(s).
EDIT: Correction to Goku's time with his family. He spent 8 years with Gohan, but it was only 7 years on the outside due to the Room of Spirit and Time.

I'll give you Yardrat but not so sure about him deciding to stay dead. You can say the logic is faulty, and being detached that's pretty easy to prove but when you're actually in the situations I can't help but feel you'd be more likely to look at things from the perspective he took.
Plus, it's not like he decided to stay dead to train. Yes, he did train, because that's what Goku does, but that wasn't his main motivation for the decision.

Correct. His main motivation for staying dead is that if he was alive, the world would be endangered. He came to this conclusion in response to a chain of events that began with the world being destroyed as a consequence of him being dead.
At the start of the Android arc, Trunks travelled back in time to keep Goku alive because the only hope for the Earth was if Goku lived to combat the deadly challenges that were coming with or without him. At the end of the arc, Goku concludes that the only hope for the Earth is if he's dead and the challenges come without him. The entire Buu Saga is the consequence for this decision.
Goku does not make good choices.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.How do you figure? Because I would think it would go "Wow, my brother came to exterminate the world because I was here and wanted to wipe out all life on Earth. And then the other Saiyans came because of him and wanted to do the same and killed a bunch of my friends. And Frieza was coming to Earth Because of me. And the whole thing with the Androids happened because Gero wanted revenge on me." And honestly people wanting revenge of Goku hardly starts there.
I mean, him being dead obviously didn't stop the world from being in danger, which I would assume would be one of the reasons he has no complaints about being brought back to life in the Buu Saga.
Like you said, it's probably not the best logic but I could see how someone in that position would come to the conclusion "Hey, maybe the world is better off without me."
It's faulty logic.
- Raditz came to Earth because Goku was sent there. He had no intel on what had become of Goku since, as evidenced by his surprise that the planet was even still populated. He was a threat because Goku existed, not because he happened to be alive at the time. Had Goku not still been alive, Raditz would still have come to learn what became of him, gone unchallenged, and the world would be doomed.
- Vegeta and Nappa came to Earth because they overheard that the Dragon Balls existed there. They weren't after Goku at all, they wanted immortality - well, Vegeta wanted immortality. Nappa wanted to revive Raditz but was quickly hushed. Had Goku remained dead, Nappa and Vegeta would have destroyed the planet, possibly literally, then travelled to Namek to use their Dragon Balls instead.
- Frieza came to Earth because Goku defeated him on Namek. He wanted revenge for the fact that he was not allowed to murder everyone Goku cares about who wasn't already dead from Nappa and Vegeta. Had Goku been dead, Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo would have followed him to the grave and Frieza would have returned to being the unopposed strongest in the universe.
- The Androids were going to happen with or without him, because Goku defeated the Red Ribbon Army. We actually get to see what the world is like if Goku is too dead to oppose them and it's much worse.
Goku's logic is completely faulty. There has never been a time when Goku being alive is an active threat to the planet. His existence has only ever been a net positive. The things that have threatened the Earth would only never have done so if Goku never existed at all, in which case a different Saiyan would have been sent to Earth and probably killed everyone.
And at the time he makes that choice
- Piccolo is redeemed.
- All Saiyans except Vegeta are dead, and Vegeta's pacified.
- Frieza and his father are dead.
- The Red Ribbon Army is wiped out.
- Dr. Gero is dead.
- The only surviving Androids are peaceful.
There is literally no one left to seek revenge on him or spring up from his past to haunt the planet. Everything is resolved. The series could have actually ended here and there would be no loose ends to tie up.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Goku's not a glutton though, when he's actually full, he stops eating, (it's a difference between him and Yajirobe, who is fat).
Yes, yes, Roshi's dinner tab, that was plate sized foot, no a monster big enough to swallow his adult form in a single bite, more over it was after a fight with a werewolf monkey transformation that left him with literally nothing left to give. It's not reasonable to assume he eats that much daily, especially since he sustained himself for seven years without money or aid.
Buldogue's lawyerI still hold to the theory that Goku chose to stay in space in order to master the Super Saiyan transformation so that way he won't completely snap and blow up the Earth the next time he used it.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Getting the shit kicked out of her and deciding that fighting is for the menfolk and asking mommy and grandma how to help her do laundry.
My various fanfics. The fact that Satan wants her to be fighter feels like...
Dispite being weak, I feel that Satan's fighting style would be pretty deadly in the right hands. His style kinda resembles Bruce Lee in a way, so imagine that style on a Super Saiyan.
Also, I feel DBS is probably foreshadowing Pan going SSJ with how Videl somehow went Super and Satan imagined going Super.

It's almost like training Gohan was more important than studying. Oh, but that a silly notion, it's not like anything ever depend on Gohan's strength.
