Sexism aside, I don't really care enough about 18 to be more than mildly annoyed by this.

I mean, honesty is a virtue, I guess.

Equally, knowing what you're doing and doing it anyway is.

Fuck off, Super.

Is Japan normally this dissonant when it comes to these things?

Someone once told me that socially, Japan is now in a similar place as the US in the '60s: big push forward from the progressives, almost-as-big push back from the reactionaries. Japanese entertainment in particular is in a rather large quagmire of wonkiness at the moment for a number of reasons which you can read about here.

Apparently the way Krillin said it in Japanese instead is reassuring her that he has no intention of dying and will be home for dinner. Make of that what you will.

I mean, Dragon Ball Super is a nostalgic cash grab by its nature, so obviously it'd be on the conservative side.

...I'm not sure how Funimation will handle this.

Japan is a remarkably patriarchal, frequently sexist culture. In other news, the sky is blue.

In every culture there is wide diversity in view points on many things.

I know for a fact that this is a trope Japanese feminists consider damaging.

Here the series is consciously aligning itself with the status quo.

Which, I mean, it obviously was going to.

I can't quite get THAT mad over it.

I would say it's a trope that feminists consider damaging regardless of region. Stay in the Kitchen is something that pretty much all feminists agree is bullshit.

I'm just hoping Funimation will change the dialogue to be at least slightly less of a Wall Banger. It's not like they don't do that with other things anyway.

Apparently the way Krillin said it in Japanese is important because it creates the implication of him reassuring her that he has no intention of dying and will be home for dinner. Make of that what you will.

Essentially a good translation of the line would be less: "Remember to make dinner!" and more: "Don't worry, I'll be home for dinner!"

Poor Krilin, he dosen't want to put his wife in danger, goes off to face the attack of someone who brutally killed him in the past, and now powered up monstroualy and brought a whole army with him, while his team heavy hitters are missin in action, and all he gets for that is people calling him an asshole who desserve to be killed because he apparently isn't PC Bro enough. That guy really can never catch a break.

Oh well, at least 18 thinks he's cool.

None of us are angry at Krillin.

We're angry at the higher-ups who made him say that, and the thinking that condones it.

Along with the bullshit Pandering that lead to only certain characters being involved in the battle in the first place.

But you know that, and are mostly just joking around anyway.
