If the preview is right, Episode 17 is going to be one of the weirdest episodes in the entire series.
Because it looks like it'll be about Goku asking Bulma's help to get Whis to train him, only for Gohan to misunderstand and think he's cheating on Chi-Chi now that Vegeta isn't there.
I swear, that's what it looks like. And if so...I don't even know what to say.
But in terms of Episode 16...it looks like Krillin is coming out of retirement, which is cool. It looks like Vegeta might surpass Goku at some point on his own, though. Which I don't find that cool. I dunno, it seems like making Vegeta stronger than Goku would ruin the point of his character. Does anyone else agree?

The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby!I don't really think its possible to have a Goku & Vegeta dynamic without the latter trying to surpass him. In the Buu saga, it made sense for him to let it go because hey, end of the series.
...except its not the end of the series anymore, so they had to retcon Vegeta accepting being Always Second Best to Vegeta accepting being Always Second Best while actively competing for first.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does. The ending to the manga had Goku apologize to Vegeta for not being able to fight him in the tournament. The Kanzenban ending had Vegeta say he'd beat Goku someday.
I don't mind the idea at all that Vegeta's mentality is that he recognizes that Goku is number one, and now he's set to become better than Goku rather than prove he was better than Goku. That fits with the manga. Super even acknowledges this early on.
The problem comes if he starts to become obsessed with it and adopts an unhealthy mindset. There's no point having an epiphany if you continue your destructive habits.
Fortunately, that doesn't seem to be case; Vegeta seems perfectly willing to humiliate himself to get Whis to train him.
Android Saga Vegeta would have just tried to force him...and get his shit pushed in as a result, and then whine how nobody recognizes his greatness.
I doubt Vegeta would return to being self-destructive about surpassing Goku tho; at worst, he's just really competitive towards the guy and an extreme Sore Loser.

Android Saga Vegeta wouldn't even have bothered because Vegeta, the Prince of All Saiyans does not need a master. It's an amazing bit of Character Development in and of itself that he's willing to seek an external master to train him rather than storming off in a huff to go do push-ups in intense gravity on his own.
EDIT: Correcting phrasing a bit. Original version said Vegeta doesn't need anyone's help, but Vegeta gets help from a lot of people throughout the series. What he doesn't get is formal training. He does all his training himself, only turning to others to lend him the tools.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Vegeta's revelation was that Goku was stronger than him. This was a revelation because up until that exact second, from the moment Vegeta had met Kakarot, he had assumed himself superior on the genetic level. Every time Goku would surpass him, as far as Vegeta was concerned, was just bullshit, luck, and divine intervention to get this low class piece of trash to stand on equal footing with the most powerful Saiyan to ever be born.
At the end of the Buu Saga, Vegeta has accepted that Goku is stronger than him. No bullshit, no lies, no unfairness, and no way he can get around it. Goku is the best.
FOR NOW.
My various fanfics. It's hard to tell, due to Baby benefitting less from the Gold Oozaru transformation than Goku benefits from Super Saiyan 4. It could just be because he am no real super sand, but it could also be that Super Saiyan 4 adds additional power on top of that which Gold Oozaru would offer.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!I think GT is bullshit but, if I must (remember that GT made Super Saiyan much weaker, either that or base Goku is way over 50x base Gohan...):
SS 1: 2.5x base
Golden Oozaru (SS 1 x Oozaru): 25x base
SS 4 (SS 3 x Oozaru): 100x base
I don't care whether or not you guys think this is wrong (although it probably is) because GT is garbage and not worth my effort to actually try.
