Look no further than Resurrection "F" for proof of the surprise thing.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: smaller attacks aren't shown to be more efficient either, since the thin Makankosappo exhausts Piccolo, or Yamcha's tiny Sokidan completely wipes him out when a large Kamehameha doesn't.

Those explosive wave things aren't energy-efficient. Vegeta couldn't kill Goku, Gohan and Krillin with one and remarked how weak he must be if he couldn't do that. Then we see him use a more concentrated attack in the Kienzan and that easily cuts through Oozaru Gohan.

This might be more on the kienzan being designed to cut though.

While Saiga brings up a good point, I'd argue equally that the thin beams aren't as ineffective as the larger attacks, but simply that the heroes Saiyans are so strong even those attacks can be shrugged off unless they are caught off guard.

At that point in the Raditz battle, I doubt Goku had the strength left to do a Kamehameha. Both he and Piccolo were exhausted. That's, I think, part of the reason it took so long to charge. That and the missing arm.

Just in general, if your energy attacks are strong enough to wound, I see no reason why you should go for full-blown incineration unless that's the only way to kill them. Sure, it's more thorough, but if you rupture their heart or brain, it doesn't much matter if you also atomized their left shin.

I have a message from another time...

Also, there's still no evidence that Piccolo ever used a two-handed version of the Special Beam Cannon in the manga, since Piccolo never uses the technique again outside possible anime filler or padding.

By the way, one thing I was surprised at in the DB manga was that Goku himself doesn't receive all that much development in the "Z" portion. Most of the character-driven stuff seemed to go to Gohan, Vegeta, Krillin, and Piccolo, with Goku being a sort of semi-messianic figure the others all look up to but who doesn't really have character arcs of his own. At least, I thought so.

This might be more on the kienzan being designed to cut though.

Which means the attack wasn't inefficient, Vegeta was too weak to do it. Because of the damage he's taken. He then tries to kill everyone with his bare hands and only uses ki attacks again for the Kienzan, so he clearly just lacks the ki to finish them all off.

At that point in the Raditz battle, I doubt Goku had the strength left to do a Kamehameha. Both he and Piccolo were exhausted. That's, I think, part of the reason it took so long to charge. That and the missing arm.

Goku definitely could do a Kamehameha at that point. At the 23rd Budokai, it was mentioned that his huge Super Kamehameha didn't lower his stamina at all, and he did another one near the end of the fight despite having fought for so long. Against Raditz, he showed no signs of exhaustion until Raditz crushed his chest. Piccolo wasn't exhausted until he used the technique.

Just in general, if your energy attacks are strong enough to wound, I see no reason why you should go for full-blown incineration unless that's the only way to kill them. Sure, it's more thorough, but if you rupture their heart or brain, it doesn't much matter if you also atomized their left shin.

The problem with that is that not all energy attacks are equal, even coming from the same user. So Goku might be able to vaporize someone with a huge Kamehameha, but that doesn't mean he could shoot a thin beam through their heart or brain.

Also, there's still no evidence that Piccolo ever used a two-handed version of the Special Beam Cannon in the manga, since Piccolo never uses the technique again outside possible anime filler or padding.

He says it's better if he uses two hands for it, he later uses both hands to produce a blast that is identical save for the size. Given the distinct shape, I think it's far more reasonable to assume this is the two-hand Makankosappo than some unrelated move. Occam's Razor.

That was during the fight with Nappa wasn't it? When he and Krillin tried to kill the latter when Gohan chose the absolute worst time to chicken out.

Does he use it in the Manga too?

Ok then.

Odd he didn't name it.

Is it wrong that I still prefer the one handed version even though the two handed one is more powerful?

I just like the way it looks.

I like the gestures he used for the one-handed version. I just really wish the two-handed version was used more.

You know, looking at some of the early panels, I forgot just how freaking short Vegeta was at first. In some panels, he looks so freaking tiny.

He is on the short side, but i'd imagine a lot of the effect in his early appearances is due to being next to Nappa, who's ginormous.

I'm a little late, but

Man, I'm surprised no one ever uses that argument when some Evilutionary Biologist or social darwinist tries to claim the strong should step on the weak.

They do; however, the strong are greedy. And as we all know, the fires of greed will burn the weak.

So apparently, Toriyama tried to give the producers of Dragon Ball Evolution some advice, and all of it was turned down. Seriously.

People are speculating that's why he's brought the franchise out of retirement, so to speak.
