No, let's actually look at the free power ups instead of picking out one and someone drawing the conclusion that "1 = the most"
- Goku
- Saiyan privilege
- Drinks a cup of water, instant power up. Supposedly not free because it's dangerous, except a few seconds rolling on the floor and Goku is completely fine and powered up.
- Said by Kuririn to have had Zenkai in the past
- Zenkai on the way to Namek
- Gets a Zenkai on Namek, making him 33x stronger
- Gets Super Saiyan without training
- Handed Potara, the most powerful boost in the entire manga
- In GT, gets Golden Oozaru and Super Saiyan 4 without training
- Super Saiyan God
- Keeping Super Saiyan God's power for poorly explained reasons
- Vegeta
- Saiyan privilege
- Zenkai on Earth
- Three Zenkai on Namek
- Majin power up
- Handed potara
- Super Saiyan 4 in a can
- Battle of Gods rage boost
- Gohan
- Hybrid power
- Rage boost
- Power unlock on Namek
- Zenkai from Freeza
- Super Saiyan 2 from rage
- Ultimate Gohan, the second biggest power up in the manga
Yeah Gohan is not the worst offender. And that's ignoring power ups that are from training but are still ridiculously easy for their power up, like Goku running around Korin's tower for three days and getting a huge power up.

Well Vegeta and Goku get more Zenkai boosts than Gohan does during their entire lives so there's that. However I do see why Shlugo might be aggravated at Gohan going from "out of shape because he didn't train for seven years" to "stronger that Super Saiyan 3 Goku and Gotenks because he sat on his ass for a day".

Which is why I said "I don't see why being a fighting junkie makes you more worthy".
Gohan didn't stop training because he's lazy. It was because he was misguided, and thought it was safe to pursue his other interests.
There is absolutely nothing noble about Goku's training. He does it because it's what he enjoys most, so he doesn't need to make any sacrifices - he freely discards anything that would get in the way of it, which makes him neglectful.

And hell, that doesn't even mention all the characters who get by on free power ups. Like the villains. Sure, they're villains, but it's absolutely absurd to think there's anything villainous about the idea of gaining strength through unconventional means. It's only because the villains incorporate hurting people into their power ups that there's anything wrong with it.

No no no, you see Gohan trained for four months to be able to handle God Videl in bed, but that only managed to get him exhausted out of both his four month training power boost and his Mystic form. But then the fetus trained for four months and drained Videl of her God powers, but since it's just a fetus it's going to forget the power boost once it reaches three years old until she happens to train for four months straight again.
And let's not get started on what happens if Mr. Satan decided to train for four months.
Rewritten? I doubt it got to that stage.
Toriyama made Gohan the main character, at some unspecified point he changed his mind and decided Goku was more appropriate for the role. We do not know when that was, and so we don't know how much stuff he set up was for Gohan or for Goku's return.
He may have decided Goku would be the hero again even before Ultimate Gohan was a thing. Although, with how sloppy the writing got once potara was introduced, I would ''guess' it was a last minute decision. Maybe he just didn't see a way for Gohan to win against Gotenks-Boo and switched tracks.

So 120 episodes?
PSN ID: FateSeraph | Switch friendcode: SW-0145-8835-0610 Congratulations! She/TheySimple: because you're practicing and utilizing the skill you're expected to be good at.
Same reason practicing the cello for four hours every day makes you "more worthy" of being a better celloist than someone who hasn't touched the cello in years.
I agree with you that there is nothing noble about Goku and Vegeta's lust for battle and endless training, but the fact remains that "lust for battle" and "endless training" are attributes better suited for being a skilled and talented warrior than "likes to read books". Gohan's a better person than they'll ever be, but the same attributes that make him an upstanding citizen also make him ill-suited to be the universe's deadliest killer.
It's like comparing a career hit-man and a doctor; the latter contributes so much more to the world than the former, but in a fight, the former would win effortlessly. Being virtuous =/= being good at violence; it's actually a handicap in that particular field.

I think just ending it like that would have been too simple, since Boo had just done that to beat Gotenks, so it's repetitive as well. I came up with an idea I'd be happier with here
, but it's a little long.
Completely disagree. Goku and Vegeta's lust for battle is bad for the universe. If it wasn't for plot, Gohan would be a far better protector because he wants to see villains defeated, not become more challenging. Even his fuck up against Cell was out of a twisted sense of justice, not Goku/Vegeta's "let them power up so I can enjoy this more".
The cello example is bad because you don't get free cello playing upgrades. There are avenues other than training, and there's no reason Gohan shouldn't have access to them just because he doesn't train.
And again, his period of not training was a mistake. Not arguing that at all. But it's definitely understandable, shouldn't have any correlation with freebie power ups, and still doesn't make him worse than the pure Saiyans.
The final example is also extremely far off, because this isn't about who would win in a fight (and Goku vs Cell vs Gohan shows it's Gohan anyway).

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Doctors cut people and rip their organs out for money.

PSN ID: FateSeraph | Switch friendcode: SW-0145-8835-0610 Congratulations! She/TheyYou know I'm just now realizing, Yamcha is told to stay behind because it's too dangerous, but it's ok for Master Roshi to be there.
I mean, I'm happy Master Roshi is finally getting a chance to fight again but it's like, is TFS' treatment of Yamcha becoming an Ascended Meme now?
Oh, certainly, Goku and Vegeta are terrible protectors. They're horribly irresponsible and regularly make selfish decisions that endanger the lives of the people they're supposed to be protecting. There is nothing about them that makes them better suited to defending innocent lives than Gohan.
The're just better suited to violence. Gohan is someone you can count on to protect you far better than you could Goku or Vegeta, but it's just unreasonable to expect Gohan to always be able to kick their asses when violence isn't something he's passionate about; it's not something he enjoys doing, and given the opportunity, he'll quit because he hates it.
That Gohan has no desire to spend the rest of his life bathing in the blood of his enemies is simultaneously what makes him a better person and a shittier fighter than Goku and Vegeta.

Which is what I responded to. "Compared to everyone else" Gohan does not use more free power ups.
