So the DBZ facebook page, when pimping the related guidebook, said there were 47 playable characters.
So. A bit less than 159. However I've already counted 49, so unless two of the following aren't playable:
- Demigra
- Towa
- Miira
- Goten
- Kid Trunks
47 can't be right. Goten and Trunks were seen in a fight, but someone has suggested that is a cutscene. It makes no sense to me that the newcomers wouldn't be playable.
Gotenks, Lazuli and Vegeta gameplay:
Edit: An upcoming strategy guide listed stuff for 47 characters. Disregarding DLC, the base game seems to have about 51 known characters, previous interviews said we'd have around 70 characters, and Bamco AU says there's a roster of 159.
47, 51, 70+, 159...
Anyone want to try to figure out how each of these numbers fit together?

I just remembered this pic from the trophy list!

If Great Saiyaman II is playable, then so should Great Saiyaman. This also means there's still characters don't know about! This leads me to believe 47 is probably the starting roster.
There's plenty of reason for Great Saiyaman to be his own character. Previous games in the Budokai/Tenkaichi series distinguished him as separate so that he could have his own JUSTICE moves rather than firing off Super Kamehamehas and shit.
Gohan's fighting style as Great Saiyaman is entirely different. He merits a separate character slot more than, say, Ultimate Gohan does.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Fair enough. I suppose if costumes have different moves and powers, then the very concept of distinguishing between Character slot and Costume slot is, itself, pretty moot.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Random thought: what would happen if two people under the effects of the Fusion Dance - let's say Gotenks and Gogeta for an example - used the Potara?
Would the ensuing fusion permanently combine all four, or would they divide into two characters split the opposite way - Gokunks and Vegeten, for instance - after the time ran out?

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.UPDATE:
From this
screenshot, we can confirm:
- Goten is playable.
- Cell Games Gohan doesn't have his base form.
Given how the transformation system is rather sucky this time around, and how Gohan only ever "used" his base form in the Cell arc's closure, I'm happy he'll have Super Saiyan as a base form. It'd be silly for Gohan's constant SS to be... not constant.
So with Goten in the game, that's 46 confirmed characters. Very safe to assume Trunks is playable, so 47.
If that description is right, none of the new characters are playable. That will be disappointing.
... So, shouldn't Goku have at least a perma SS costume for the Cell Saga?
And yeah, not having Base Cell Saga Gohan makes sense, since being in perma SS was kind of the point of that training.
But if they're acknowledging the fact that they did away with the power drain, why are the SS forms temporary?
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariGoku should but I can understand why they wouldn't - either that costume would be the exact same stats as base Goku, or it'd have different stats and be potentially unfair.
Plus Goku is meant to represent him across all arcs, unlike Gohan who represents a specific portion where he was always a Super Saiyan.
Incidentally, I'm going to make my custom "base" Saiyan look like a Super Saiyan and then just equip Super Saiyan 2. Hell yeah...

It'd make a certain amount of sense. After all, given that you know it can be done and the custom character you create is supposed to represent you...
Well, the Perma SS training is something I'd do, at least. Then again, I'd also try to train SS 2 the same way.

What I said was intentionally exaggerated to make a point.
