Actually turns out it was 8 months. Either way I was wrong.
You got me there.
As far as I'm concerned, that last bit just didn't happen. Black was beaten by Trunks all hyped up on FRIENDSHIP, and that's final.
That I can agree on.
Yes, I'm sure when someone gets defeated/killed you become omnipotent is the better writing here.
Honestly, if they were just gonna have him come back and do that, then why even pretend Trunks stood a chance of stopping him in either version. Why have him cut Fused Zamasu in half in either version if he was just gonna Lol!Nope and then the future gets wiped out anyway?
I've sometimes felt that Toriyama can consider his characters utterly expendable (as in he barely gives any thought to their long term use and is more than willing to toss them away to serve his plot), and this applies it to an entire timeline. He screws over Trunks just to tell the story he wants to tell, then blatantly ignores the potential solution (keeping Trunks around to enter the tournament and use the Super Dragonballs to fix the problem).
One Strip! One Strip!Well, that part about FT beating Zamasu up wasn't in the manga IIRC, so it wasn't in the outline, hence Toei's decision as opposed to Toriyama's.

"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"![]()
Actually, Trunks manages to cut him in half in both versions.
In the manga, his fusion is only temporary (because in this version, Zamasu is not yet a Kaioshin), but for reasons I can't recall, when time is up, Zamasu and Black are still holding together (and turning into a blob of unstable goo), so Trunks moves in and cleaves them in half.
That just leads to Me's a Crowd Zamasu instead of Wallpaper Zamasu however.
Edit: Murasaki'ed.

One Strip! One Strip!Right. That was it. Same dude so even though they should have been defusing, they held together.
Zamasu and Black really wanted to stay inside each other.
Oh god...why did I do that? Now I can't unseen it.
No. It wasn't just that!
It was a Yaoi joke.
I hate Yaoi.
I have finally become the thing I've fought against.
There is no hope left.
One Strip! One Strip! That is still incredibly dumb. The anime at least said the fusion is permanent because they're both Kais. Why bother being different if you're going to be same?
Still as stupid.
BL can mean a lot of things. I just say Yaoi because I want to be a hypocrite.

Randomness was hoping more to get the specific visual, but apparently it's really tame...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.

The only thing wrong with nuking the future timeline is Future Trunks just going to an exact copy of it after the fact.
