Turles' gimmick wasn't just being an evil Goku, he also introduced the Tree of Might to power up with by draining a planet of its lifeforce. That by itself is pretty cool.
And people like Black Clover, I assume, because they like how it uses familiar shonen elements and storytelling but find its execution enjoyable.

Here's the thing I go by. It is perfectly okay to like bad or mediocre things. The deal is you can't defend or overstate what they actually are.
Example being the Bayformers movies. You are allowed to like them, to have some enjoyment in seeing them but do not consider them good movies or say they are better than they actually are.
There is some shit you can't defend. Hell I relatively like BC but no way in fucking Hell am I gonna defend it much.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I've been bingeing Black Clover recently and actually kind of like it. It is absolutely by the numbers but I don't consider that bad in and of itself. From the way people talked about it I expected the writing and fights to be straight up terrible which I don't think is true.
People compare it to Fairy Tail, which I actually think is too insulting.

I am convinced that Black Clover owes a good chunk of its popularity to its haters.
This song needs more love.
Theres a trope for that though I forget its name.
Eh either way its just the seasons fad.
No big deal in the end.

Well only one arc majorly fails at writing during a particular moment so yeah comparing it to FT is an insult to BC.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I don't mind Tullece, I'm just not going to credit the tree's coolness to him.
He uses it as a weapon, which is why I call it his gimmick. Take away or play down the few cool things the film villains showed up with and they don't have anything worth talking about.

I'd say Turles has more impact as a Saiyan villain purely because of how he tries to get Goku and Gohan to choose between the Earthling and Saiyan parts of their heritage and they both firmly come down on the side of the former.
Broly is a Saiyan but that's just it, he doesn't really interact with Goku's heritage in the same way. He just goes around punching people.
I will refrain from talking any more about Black Clover because I don't like talking about things I wholly hate to people who like them so I will simply say this: Black Clover combines every aspect I hate from every other Shonen manga I'm aware of and probably some I'm not.
"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"![]()

But unlike the other gimmicks it has very very little to do with what he is. You could use that with just about anything. This is exemplified by the fact that his troupe aren't even Saiyans, he just happens to be a Saiyan in a group of random alien invaders who use the tree.

Ya mean how Tullece pulls a Raditz as opposed to Broly trying something different?

...
Between Black Clover and Fairy Tail...
..man, I can't even decide. Black Clover is just...it's by the numbers.
Fairy Tail failed to even be turn you brain off fun.
And yet, I'm still probably going to watch the anime of the latter, while not even bothering to check out the anime of the former.
...Tree of Might was a cool idea. I wonder how it would have faired in the main series? I mean, Goku probably would have just stomped anyone using it, because that shit just doesn't work on him, but it still would have been fun.
...Bojack is the greatest.
At least Turles ripped off something (and more importantly, stated the conflict outright which made Goku defiantly declare "I'm an Earthling not a Saiyan" something I wish he would do more).
Broly hasn't got shit. He's got no personality. His backstory is so bad he would be better without one. His fighting style has one or two cool moves but nothing that really sticks out to me (compare to Lord Slug's giant namek form which is just not seen enough). He's just a big screetchy lummox.
"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"Say what you will about the dubs, but their movie titles are way better than the Japanese ones. Tree of Might is a much more intriguing title than The Decisive Struggle for the Whole Earth.
It's like how Tri-beam isn't accurate to the Japanese name, but it's a whole lot more distinct than Chi Blast Cannon.
De Romanīs, lingua Latina gloriosa non fuī.
I agree precisely with the first statement.
With the second... I just don't think it's an accurate name. It makes a square hole. Also, the TFS rendition of the scene is so good it just etched itself into my brain and they use Kikoho.

"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"

Broly has a lot that sets him apart. His form is pretty unique (as in, the literal form and his physique in it), he has unique ki effects/lighting, he's way more bloodthirsty and brutal than most DB characters, his design/backstory incorporate elements of Sun Wukong's story (particularly the headband of control) that makes him a mirror to Goku, he's got a unique fighting style with grapples and slams, a unique style of dress for a Saiyan (or for anyone really). He was the first Super Saiyan villain and always stayed one. There have been other Saiyan villains, but they were outdated ages ago and don't have his impact.
Slug is way less unique compared to him. Sure, the other movie villains don't go giant. But Ma Junior did, and he doesn't stand apart much. Tullece isn't really evil Goku more than any other Saiyan, all he has is the same face/haircut. I'm not sure why sameface is being highlighted as a positive.
