Yeah the fodder troopers had a similar role as the Force & they certainly did not do well. The Troopers don't stack up at all.

Like that pose they did to Goku, Cauli, & Kale had me going "What the fuck are you doing?" Scratch what I said there is no routine its just people doing whatever the fuck they want & clearly they suck at improvisation.

Do they not have a choreographer?

Tohei clearly did not give a shit there.

It's less the poses and more the fact that they're not distinct from the Ginyus. They're the same joke and they act the same way, even though they shouldn't act like villains.

Only villains have poses...

Which makes me rather glad the manga appears to be toning down their Sentai-ness.

Also this is due to personal taste but I always hoped the Pride Troopers would be more like American Superheroes than Japanese.

That would at least be different, but I don't know if anyone involved is familiar with American superheroes to use that.

I think what I mean is whenever I see a superhero in an anime its always the Sentai type where their extremely campy & flamboyant doing extreme poses, yelling at the top of their lungs with phrases involving justice & such ala Power Rangers.

Well it could just be me seeing not enough Japanese Supes to know if theres more variety or not.

I'd like to see some classics like the Cape & Cowl.

Watch My Hero Academia and One Punch Man. Both are fantastic and both are all about western-styled superheroes.

Not sure what you all are talking about with "The Pride Troopers act like villains". They don't. Sentai poses are things heroes do, not villains. It's the Ginyu Force who are weird, being bad guys who do team poses.

Yeah I watch those 2 anime's already.

It's just I got way, way too into Jiren being Japanese Superman & then hoped the Pride Troopers were like the Legion of Superheroes.

Again its purely my personal tastes & the fanon characterization I gave Jiren after buying into his hype.

Save for Jiren, the Pride Troopers ended up being the biggest disappointment about the TOP. In hindsight it's unfortunate that most of them got fed to Kale since Kale ended up repeating the "learn to control my rage" anyway.

[up][up][up] nothing to do with the poses. It's the way they act when they try to eliminate Kale and Caulifla, their attitudes are very much like minor villains (aka the Ginyu Force).

How aggressive are they...?

Does it involve mockery...?

Does it involve overconfidence...?

Does it involve underestimation...?

All three of my pictures were classic tokusatsu heroes. The first was Kamen Rider (Rider 1 and Rider 2, specifically) and the third was Ultra Man. They're all good guys.

It also bugged me that there really wasn't anything heroic in how the Pride Troopers presented themselves. Admittedly, the ToP isn't a good setting for heroics. However, something could have been done to make them more face than heel.

[up][up][up]I remember when Toppo said something along the lines of "We are fighting for survival, we can't afford to fight heroically anymore." and I though "Dude, you guys been mostly ganging up on people so far, that train already left."

On another note, damn this thread moves fast these days.

I mean, look at who they were fighting. Goku is the Arc Villain who started this evil tournament, 17 and 18 are his teammates. Kale is a dangerous berserker who had just went on a violent rampage, destroying much of the arena and eliminating their teammate Vuon, and Caulifla is her ally. From their perspective, them being faces is obvious.

I'd have Vegeta earn the right to visit Earth for a day and use that to fill his BOG role.

I've thought about the structure of other arcs and will post when I get home

I was looking at this and then the "earned/not earned" discussion happened.

The Pride Troopers had the misfortune of being antagonists in a series where antagonists are always smug jackasses. So it kind of goes against their supposed heroic nature.

It's funny how the same thing that's considered dishonorable when villains do it, is perfectly fine when the "heroes" do the same. Framing is everything I guess.
