The double kamehameha at the end of this ep was really good.

Unless you count Roshi busting in to ask Goku to use the money to buy porn at the end of the first episode or Bulma buying him prostitutes in one, there aren't any in-between arc episodes featuring Roshi being a pervert. Hell, there's only one episode in ALL OF SUPER with Roshi being a perv throughout the episode, and he and Puar train himself out of that character trait only a few episodes after that one.

Heh the moment Roshi barges into Goku's house is funny cause he says they can now go blu-ray.

I think that line is chuckle-worthy.

[up][up] You forgot Ten's recruitment episode. And they make a rape joke in the tournament of power, even after saying he's overcome his lust.

Tenshinhan's recruitment episode was the one episode in all of Super I was referring to, and the joke in the Tournament of Power seems to be that Roshi was talking about just beating her up with his pent-up testosterone and muscular state, and she misunderstood his meaning and eliminated herself to not be raped. He definitely seems to think she overreacted, considering his confusion at her eliminating herself.

That is definitely not what he's talking about. He mentions suppressing his lust and being pent up because of it, and that she tried to seduce him in "that state" and not to "blame [him] for what happens" while making groping motions toward her. So throw in victim-blaming and slut shaming in there as well.

Of course he thought she overreacted, he's got really fucked up morality.

And that's from her perspective, with weird visuals, dramatic shading, and a weirdly colored background. She then eliminates herself and Roshi is all "Well, that was weird, wonder why she did that?" The implication is that Roshi meant something completely different and/or her perspective is distorted by fear.

Yeah they really should get rid of gross old pervert Roshi.

Cause Master Roshi is fucking awesome. He was a total boss in this tournament. He showed thrills, he showed chills, he showed hills. We got to see the man, the myth, the legend himself, creator of the Kamehameha, the mortal who bested Demon King Piccolo & the first master of Son fucking Goku, Muten Goddamn Roshi. A man so great he earned both Vegeta & Beerus' respect. [awesome]

Now this Roshi I want to see all the fucking time.

[up][up] No, the filters are as such are nowhere near enough to change the meaning of what he clearly states and is doing with his hands.

Roshi thinking she's overreacted doesn't mean he's the right when given what we've seen him think is acceptable behaviour.

This is just whitewashing what is clearly very gross behaviour.

The joke is that she misinterpreted his meaning. Both what he said and did can be interpreted differently. His words can be taken to mean "my testosterone is pent up and now I'm going to beat you up because you tried to seduce me" and his grabby hands can just mean "I'm going to grab you and beat you up". Seriously, that's the joke. The joke is that Roshi would never do such a thing nowadays, but she misinterpreted his words and meaning and thought that he was going to rape her. That's what the tone of the scene and flow of the joke suggests.

You're drawing that conclusion (that that is the intention of the joke) out of absolute nowhere. There's nothing to imply that Roshi was going to beat her up, and his words are pretty clearly

And Roshi's controlling himself now, he hasn't improved as a person or moved beyond his lust. In a situation where he could be a pervert without it having consequences for him, then it stands to reason he'd do it. His only motivation was fear that his perversion would be exploited as a weakness.

He literally says it's dangerous to try to seduce him because of his pent up lust. That means it's harder for him to control himself, and links what he's going to do next is because of that. The meaning could not be any clearer.

They need to chuck the pervertness into a fire & be done with it forever.

Yeah, he's going to beat her up harder because he's not used to holding back his sexual impulses. In what way does your interpretation make sense for the scene whatsoever? How does your version's punchline work? The punchline is Roshi going "well, I dunno what she was thinking, but it's lucky that I won without even having to fight, I guess". What's the punchline in your version? My interpretation actually has the joke function as a joke, while yours is just some weird statement about how Roshi hasn't actually hasn't improved, even though this scene is literally the pay-off to his training.

Saiga Since: Feb, 2011 Relationship Status: Getting away with murder
#70489: Dec 3rd 2017 at 1:35:36 AM

No, he has "improved" by Super's logic. Because he couldn't be exploited by seduction. Super never made out that he was trying to improve morally or anything like that.

My interpretation makes sense because it's literally the most straightforward interpretation of his lines, that does not require inserting an additional meaning that has not been backed up by anything. The punchline is Caway ringing herself out. Roshi's belief that she overreacting doesn't mean that he's right, it's just Roshi being wacky old pervy Roshi. He also complained when people 'overreacted' to his previous acts of perversion.

edit: Your interpretation really doesn't make sense because there's also nothing weird about her wanting to avoid an apparently brutal beatdown at the hands of someone she can't beat anyway. Either way, her attempts to avoid it are equally understandable (getting the crap kicked out of you isn't a pleasant experience even if it avoids sexual assault) so I wouldn't call Roshi correct in calling her strange.

Exact wording:

Roshi (while triumphant music plays): "I've always lived according to my desires. Yet I've suppressed those desires. Do you understand that? All that energy I would have wasted...is pent up in this body beyond its limits. It's boiling up like magma! You've tried using seduction on me in this state. Don't blame me for what happens."

Caway eliminates herself.

Krillin (nervously): He was just acting, obviously.

Here's something I've been wrong on, Roshi is utterly unsurprised by and doesn't even comment on Caway eliminating herself. Seems less like he was going to beat her up and more like that was his plan all along: to deliberately act as rape-y as possible to scare her into eliminating herself. Roshi's even greater than I thought!

Jesus fucking Christ, in what world is threatening someone with rape a great thing?

Anyway, Kuririn's comment makes sense in reference to Roshi seeming to fall for Caway's seduction and then stopping himself from being attacked.

Okay I'm a fan of pragmatism & playing dirty as much as the next guy but purposely threatening your opponent with sexual assault even if they don't mean it is going way too far.

[up][up]No, Krillin says that in response to Beerus cheering Roshi on for his victory.

All's fair on the battlefield, especially with these kinds of stakes. If your opponent is so weak-willed that they'll eliminate themself out of fear, than they didn't deserve to be on the battlefield. Besides, Roshi didn't even say anything explicit, at most he heavily implied.

Also, she did start fighting in that metaphorical arena first, by trying to seduce him and then sneak-attack.

But again, the issue with Roshi's pervertedness was that it could be exploited. Kuririn reacts immediately as Roshi appears to fall for it but then reveals he doesn't. Once Roshi wins, he acts with relief. It doesn't make any sense

And yeah this is just getting really gross now. Even if your interpretation was correct, he was easily capable of defeating her and could have just ringed her out himself. No need to try and fuck with their head on top of that.

Please do not say that women are weak for taking threats of sexual assault or rape seriously.

Man, 118 was a great episode. The direction, in particular, was a huge highlight. The framing of the two simultaneous fights, cutting back and forth as the battles escalate over time, culminating in a Father-Son Kamehameha from opposite sides of the arena was fantastic.

Also, I dunno who Beerus was talking to with that "Just say something" line, whether it be the announcer, Champa, himself, anyone else present, or all of the above, but it was a powerful moment nonetheless.

Oh yeah. Took me a while to find subs for the episode.

Man, they had Piccolo bust out his Hellzone Grenade again even though he used that in the last (and only other one, so far) focus fight he had. That's hilariously typical.

The choreography as U. Gohan fought the two Namekians was cool, and I'm glad they at least didn't have Piccolo just continue fighting as though he was on par with Gohan. Sketchy on the Makankosappo being effective with that kind of power gap, though.

It's also really annoying with how the other ki attacks left no damage on anyone through this episode, like when Gohan blocks the attack for Piccolo or Gohan's Kamehameha completely engulfs the pair when he's so powerful, etc. A usual problem in Super but particularly noticeable this episode.

17 and 18 getting into the villain act and looking for Goku to join was funny. Aside from that, Universe 2 was just annoying as always. I dislike that the male Universe 2 competitors were able to take the girls' schtick and then produce a stronger effect than they did.

PMC, your interpretation of the Roshi stuff is pretty fucked up, and its made me even less inclined to take anything you say seriously, that's all.

[up] I don't think the men were that much stronger, especially since they were barely able to do anything to 17 or 18 and an "exhausted" Goku. They all had a but more trouble with Ribrianne and her group.

I'm just glad U2 is finally out. Seriously their love motif was fucking annoying.

Goddamn it, love, love, love, love, love, LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God fucking damn it it wore away on my sanity.

Is this supposed to be part of the parody, is that supposed to justify the repetitiveness? Just spamming the same word over & over again. I was relieved when the big guy said Amour cause at least thats being a little creative.

The Pride Troopers or their God don't say justice every other sentence & we know their supposed to be an over the top parody too so U2 has no excuse for their sheer constant laziness & repetition.

I am officially propositioning the word "Love" when said by any character of U2 as a "Most Annoying Sound". Does anyone agree with me?
