[up]x5 Pretty much. I mean the dub is a niche product, if they piss off the dub fans by changing Schemmel I don't think they'd gain new fans to make up for it, since most sub fans can just stick to the sub.

I don't think Schemmel is a bad fit for Goku, but it's definitely not accurate to Nozawa. Given that dub and sub are both adaptations I'm not worried if they're different

Yeah, like, it's only bad if you assume that the original Japanese casting is perfect or that what a character can/should sound like isn't up for interpretation.

Which is something I hate; these are fictional characters, they don't have "real" voices and people acting like "Japanese equals good" or more broadly "Original equals good" and that what would be a serviceable or even great voice on any other basis is bad because it doesn't sounds like the original is very strange to me.

Yeah its different linguistic cultural standards.

Its the point of making a good adaptation. Things gotta be changed.

I mean, when the person who created the characters prefers a voice over any other choices, then they probably have more of a “correct” view than the rest of the fan base.

The thing is, the original voice for a character is chosen for a reason, and I don't think it's up to the localization team to decide they want to go with something completely different. It's unfaithful localization, plain and simple.

Like, I wouldn't even mind if the dub Goku sounded nothing like Nozawa if they preserved the "feel" of the character, but every time I hear the English dub, I can't shake the feeling it's warping up Goku character slightly with the voice acting. Like they tried to make him more similar to a standard American hero, or something. Sorry, I can't quite explain it correctly I think. It just sounds wrong to me, every time I hear it.

I mean, I don't know about anyone else but I can't consciously choose what sounds good to me. Author's opinion or not, if it sounds bad, it sounds bad.

And I didn't say anything about "correct", I dislike Naowaza (is that her name?) but I know other people like it and that's fine.

'American hero' was definitely the original intent. They've moved away from that.

The dub of BOG felt like Goku to me.

Death of the author is a thing.

Goku's voice is fitting. It sounds playful when he wants to be fun & epic when hes serious.

Nothing about his character is being warped.

[up] Sean really showed off his chops there, especially with the "you will not destroy my world" line.

Like Goku original voice of course. It seems like a bad dubbing practice to give a character vastly different sounding voice than they had in original.

Back then the voice actors didn't even have access to the original. Chris Sabat talks about it in this video.

What would happen if two Fusion Dance fusions put on the Potara Earrings? Like if Gogeta and Gotenks Potara Fused?

They'd eventually defuse early, because now Potarra and Dance Fusion are essentially identical if both sides are done by non kai.

What if our heroes spent a whole day just trying to see how many people they could cram into a single fused being before they start popping out from time running out?

Can Potara earrings work on anyone, or just people who have ears? Could Freeza participate in a Potara fusion?

To go back to the voice discussion for a bit.

It all comes down to preference in the end; there's no "correct" voice for one character, even if the creators themselves like a voice, because it's their own preference. You can think a voice is fitting for a character or not, it really doesn't matter.

Sean has been Goku for over a decade and a half now in the West, unless something unfortunate happens, he is for all intents and purpose, American Goku. Ignoring that, it would extremely hard to emulate Nozawa's voice since ya know...she's been voicing Goku since he was a kid.

I originally didn't like it much, but I grown accustomed to it and I think she's a great fit for the type of character Goku is in Japan.

I also think Sean is a good fit for what they were going for in the original dub, and he's grown nicely into the "lovable idiot" that he's been transitioning into for Super.

Shulgo, sorry, but I will fight you for every single step for calling Schemmel's Goku bad. Schemmel IS Goku to me. This is one thing I feel very strongly about.

I respect Masako Nozawa, I really do, but she is miscast as adult Goku. Her voice does not fit an adult man, no matter how childish he acts at times.

Schemmel, IMO, hits the perfect balance of goofiness and badassery for Goku's character.

Ah, so at the beginning thy didn't care enough to find someone with a fitting voice for Goku and now they are unwilling to change. I see, thanks.

It's uncommon to straight up recast characters in Japan unless there's extenuating circumstances, or if the series is being remade and there's been large gap from the original adaptations.

Is anyone going to bring up Masako X's Abridged goku and how it's basically evolved into a blend of the Japanese and American voices? Or is that only something I feel is off? Well if we're bringing up voices that might have been miscast, I've a few issues with american Piccolo, Yamcha and Chi Chi. After listening to the japanese dub I've noticed Piccolos deep and gruff voice takes alot away from the character. Yamcha's always felt a bit too surfer dude, which fits his role, but I feel like the harmony gold voice for him felt a bit more right for his personality. And Chichi, well that's more of a problem of the voice direction, she needs to sound just a little more dimwited for her character to be tolerable.

I guess it's a result of my mostly experiancing Dragon Ball through what manga was availble at the library and the ocassional episode that a friend might have on tape. But my headcannon voices dragonball characters is all over the place, taking from different dubs. heck, ALL of Krillins voices sound right to me for different eras.
