Its like a classic comic book.

It may not be a compelling story-line but hey its an old kids comic of course its simple.

I still hold Dragon Ball in high regards due to growing up with it, but nowadays I try to temper both my expectations and my opinion of its writing. It's not easy to do that, but I feel its for the best that I have.

Nostalgia is obviously a big factor, but I don't think something has as much staying power as Dragon Ball if it lacks genuine merit. It's not the best written thing ever, but I do think in more than a few aspects people give it too little credit.

[up]x5 I don't think that is the cause of its flaws.

Making it more conventional would not improve the quality of writing any, and it would make its shortcomings harder to accept.

I think DB really is good, in spite of its flaws. And I didn't really come to appreciate it until later in life, so it's not just growing up with it for me.

[up]x4 With the advent of the Makaioshin, I think we could have gooten the demon realm without Dabra. I think that is the real wasted opportunity as there is a bigger connection to the lore there.

I've never seen/read it all the way through until just a couple years ago myself.

I wouldn't still be here if I didn't love dragon ball.

There's no way of knowing if some of the ideas some of us have come up with would have really been better or not. I disagree with a lot of things Toriyama did (I feel like a lot of characters are really expendable to him), but I can't deny that he created something spectacular.

@Handsome Rob

I feel the same way. Before I learned about "finer" points of Dragon Ball from IANCE or Saiga (or just about any person well versed in Dragon Ball), I liked the superhero aspects Dragon ball before learning that it is a subversive action series created by a comedy writer. I will admit that I am no longer as in love with Dragon Ball as I used to be but I still enjoy the series and it did bring us some of the finest moments in anime/manga history. It is not perfect but it is good for what it is. [tup]

So all in all, it's not a flaw in Dragon Ball's writing that certain characters don't get their lemonlight focus.

It's kind of overrated and put on a pedestal by crazier fans, but it's overall a good franchise. I'll always love it.

There is a reason why its as big as it is.

There's a reason why we are following the adventures of people in their 40s-50s despite being in a genre that mostly focuses on young people.

Tell that to every human that died to Majin Buu. Or the people Frieza killed before Whis intervened.

You may be correct but that doesn't mean you're right. tongue

We've seen what Dragonball's world looks like without the reviving power of the Dragonballs. That timeline doesn't even exist anymore.

Of course it is. Literally 90% of what happens post Red Ribbon is directly connected to Goku getting in everyone's way, and everyone getting in his way.

I actually liked the origins of the Shadow Dragons and would unironically like to see the plot point of overusing the Dragon Balls return.
